Polish Question

Hello all. I always hear different ideas about working polishes in. Some people say one minute some say five minutes. I think I read somewhere about "Overworking" a polish. What exactly does that mean . If there IS a way to overwork the polish, What are the consequences and how do you avoid doing this?
