View Full Version : 67 Volkswagen bus in need of major cleaning/detailing questions

I’m selling a 67 Volkswagen bus to raise money for a honeymoon. As you’ll note in the pictures it is extremely dirty, rusty and needs upholstery repair… The van does not run (no engine) and requires a tow everywhere it goes.

I have never removed rust from a car and my detailing experience is limited to 10-year-old cars that have minor scratches (big thanks to this forum).

Question 1: Is this car beyond a detailing service and need to be taken to a body shop? (I have called three places and they won’t give any sort of quote without seeing in person, which is understandable.) I live in Southern California so there are many places around.

Question 2: Is this car worth sinking a lot detailing money into it in order for it to look cool prior to selling? (I’ve sold used cars before but nothing that doesn’t have a engine). I know there are a lot of variables to this question; I’m trying to find a balance in order to maximize the amount of money towards this honeymoon.

Question 3: I was going to sell it on eBay - trying to figure out its value has been a significant challenge and neighborhood offers have run a wide range. Is there a better approach to selling such an old/unique car.

Up until a couple of days ago I had been a long-time reader but had never posted anything. Big thank you for all the helpful information.

Hey,

Here is my view - No, I wouldn't invest any time or money on products etc in an attempt to get more for the Bus. Sure you could tidy it up a little but there really isn't much point in terms of maling it worth more. These split screen Buses are elevating in price all across the world, even down here in NZ, this Bus in this condition would fetch good coin.

As for where to sell it, being on the other side of the world I won't be much help to you sorry. Ebay I would imagine would be a good start, www.oldbug.com may be worth a look. Even shoot in & talk to a local VW parts shop, VW clubs, that kind of thing, for some advice. Hope this helps some.

I agree with this. Going to just sell it. I had not heard of oldbug.com before - thank you.

Fascinating. I had looked at this site years ago but had forgotten all about it. Thank you.
