Presently own a Porter-Cable 7424 and a Meguiars 3000 and I want something with a bit more power; am thinking about getting a GG15 or 21. However, I have invested a lot of money into various backing plates and Lake Country Pads for these machines. From reading about the GG, it appears that they use proprietary backing plats and pads. Is this true, or will the pads work on the GG15 or the GG21.

How many inches are your lake country pads?

The Griot's BOSS polishers (G21 or G15) uses backing plates specific to the polisher but you can use your existing pads for it. The BOSS pads are just designed to work with the BOSS polishers but you'll be fine with your pads.

I would highly suggest you get the Griot's BOSS G21. This will come with a 6" backing plate and you can put your 6.5" lake country pads (if you have them). Then I would highly suggest you buy the Griots Garage BOSS 5 inch Backing Plate (http://www.autogeek.net/griots-boss-5-inch-backing-plate.html) so that you can use your lake country 5.5" pads (if you have them). (This 5" BOSS backing plate comes stock with the G15). Having the 5" backing plate along with your G21 will give you the versatility to use both 5.5" and 6.5" pads and the 21mm long throw to tackle heavy defects with ease.

Hope this helps.

The backing plates for the G15 and G21 (as with all the long throw polishers) are specific to those polishers. You can't use a standard backing plate say from your PC on them. Pads however are not. You can use any pad that fits the backing plate, but long throw polishers work best with pads designed for long throw polishers that put more stress on the pad. There are allot of good pads out there for long throw polishers--GG, Lake Country, Buff & Shine etc.

I use the B&S Uro Tec pads on my G15 and find them to be excellent. 6" pads for the G15 and 7" pads for the G21.
