View Full Version : How can I tell if my car still has opti-coat on it?

When I purchased my car the previous owner had a clear-bra and opti-coat installed. I contacted him and asked if he had the whole car opti-coated or only the doors forward with the clear-bra. He said he did not remember.

So is there any way I can tell if the car has opti-coat on it? There is this video where the guy noticed opti-clean had different results on parts of the car with opti-coat and without: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0z1AdX1doU

I'd love to go ahead fully correct my car to get rid of all the swirls but of course with opti-coat I'd have to use a non-abrasive polish such as carpro essence plus.

I would save the headache and just redo it. The OCD in me wouldn't want to wonder or try to remember off a previous owner. Plus once you do it your self you can sleep at night knowing it was done right lol.

I'll probably do that! When the car has a bunch of swirls in it and opti-coat is supposed to resist that I suppose it has no use being on the car, hah.

•Unless they're abraded away...
-Optimum's OC-2.0/OC-Pro Coatings
should never go away. (At least that's
how they've been marketed: Having
"permanency", as it were.)

•With that in mind:
-if an Opti-Coat Coating was
applied to your vehicle it is
(in Optimum techno-speak):
"still there"---warts and all.

Go over the car with a mild clay. Once you get all the bonded contaminants off the surface. If it's the horizontal panels are the ones in question I believe contaminants are actually causing the water or Opti clean to act the way it's acting.

Opti Coat or any ceramic coating will not resist swirling. If it bothers you, correct the paint and seal as you like.

they dont make anything that can take a coating off? that would be yet another reason i dont want a coating.

i often wonder how you can tell if any wax is left on a car? for example, miguiars new fast finish claims it lasts a 100 washes. how can they tell its still on there after 100 washes?

You can call Optimum and check the vin to find out if it is Opti-Coat Pro or OC 2.0 or Gloss Coat. Either way polishing to remove the swirls will remove the coating. You could try a decon wash to see if it still beads water too. But probably just going to want to polish it if you're a detailer and it has swirls haha.
