someone on another forum told me that hard paint tends to get rock chips in it easier. anyone ever heard this? also is there other ways to tell how hard or soft the paint is?

Well, although this isn't universally true, generally things that are harder are more brittle. So you can draw the conclusion that hard paints would chip easier, but it's likely a lot more complicated than that. One could also surmise that a more brittle paint would get larger chips for the same impact, which could also be construed as hard paint getting rock chips easier.

I'm always wary of what's promulgated
on many/(most) other car-care forums...
(MOL being one of the exceptions).

•IMO:
Different paint-systems' vulnerability
to getting-chipped-by-rocks depends
on several factors; here are just a few:
-the size of the rock(s)
-area of impact
-speed of impact
-angle of impact
-whether it's SS; or BC/CC
-flex-agents
-etc.

"Hardness" of Paint Indicators:
•Note:
I'll be going with (paraphrasing) what
Mike Phillips has said on many occasions:

-Instead of talking about the hardness
of paint...it'd be more attune to say the
"Workability" of the paint; that is:
how easy/difficult is it to clean-up the
paint's defects.
-You won't know for sure how "soft/hard"
any vehicle's paint is (ie: its Workability),
until you begin to clean-up its defects.

i heard it on miguiars forum. all i know is some cars get no chips at all in 200,000 miles and others are absolutely hammered after two years
