C5 Z06 detail

Alright guys, I purchased a black C5 Z06 a couple months back with only 19k miles on it. Paint has moderate to severe scratches/swirls. As of this moment I only have a PC7424 XP. What pad/compound would be best for my situation? Or am I totally F'd? Lol thanks for any help in advance

I've had success with Meguiar's D300 correction compound on Meguiar's microfiber cutting pads followed by Meguiar's M205 on either a polishing pad or finishing pad.

Thanks for the quick reply. Did you use the 5 or 6" pads. I'm guessing maybe I should do the 5" since it's a PC 7424XP?

Grab a few LC Hybrid foam pads: Lake Country Hybrid Power Finish Ultra Performance Pad System, buffing pads, foam pads, polishing pads (http://www.autogeek.net/hybrid-power-finish-pads.html)

Seal it with you favorite LSP and enjoy your awesome finish.

Hi,
If you don't already have them for your PC, definitely consider having a small assortment of backing plates and pads for it.

I'd suggest the new Griots 5" Ventilated Backing Plate for 5.5" Pads, a 3.5" Lake Country Backing Plate for 4" Pads, , and even the smallest 3" LC Backing Plate (actually 2-7/8") for use with 3" Pads.

For Pads, have an assortment of the 5.5 LC Thin Pro, LC 4" and LC or Griots 3". There are of course various other pad choices. Have a few agressivenesses and a good number of each.

As for polishes, I recommend highly, the Wolfgang trio of Polishes, being Wolfgang Uber Compound, Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover, and Wolfgang Finishing Glaze. 8oz of each should be more than enough product on hand to easily do the Vette more than once.

Commonly, the GM paints are a bit on the hard side, and the WG Uber will have a little better cut, and correction with dealing with the slightly deeper sleeks, versus Wolfgang TSR, yet it it finishes down so magnificently like an ultra fine finishing polish, you'll think of stopping right then and there, and going directly to the Wax-Sealant-etc.

The Finishing Glaze is great as the final Polish.

There is not one less than totally stellar product within the entire Wolfgang line. These products cannot be spoken about highly enough all phenominal, the polishes are all world class, and as well all other products with the Wolfgang name on it. The Pad Cleaners, Pad Conditioners, Exterior Trim Sealant, the whole kit and caboodle.

Again, many hundreds of different protectants, but again, and keeping it in the family, products such as Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant 3.0, or WG Fuzion would be marvelous picks. After a wash, finish touch ups with something like Pinnacle Crystal Mist Spray Detailer will help keep that deep, dripping wet candy like look.

Being that c5 paint's are normally pretty hard i'd probably try a few different combos
but for the porter cable maybe like griots microfiber cutting pad/boss correcting cream start there
and maybe orange/black pad to finish with whatever final polish you like.

Fg400 refine with speed then powerlock it.Had a vette dealer in town and used the same method Everytime .

Worked very well on our black C5 w moderate defects, followed with WG Finish Glaze on white LC flat using GG6.

Used Megs 5.5" microfiber pads

I have a white C5 and i used Wolfgang Uber Compound followed by total swirl remover followed by finishing glaze and finished with their paint sealant. Pads i used were Lake Country hydro tech pads. Cyan for the compound, tangerine for swirl remover as well as the glaze and crimson for the sealant. I made 6 section passes with everything except the sealant I made 4. Came out pretty good and I will upload a pic of the roof which is black so you have an idea. So you know my car has 107xxx miles and had never been compounded so it looked far worse than yours. Hope it helps!

Also if you want to try to go less aggressive you could try Griots All in One sealant. I use it with LC Hydro tech tangerine pads and for a one step it does a good job.The photo is a 50/50 shot on a VW Jetta.

polishing-pads/polishes first.
(May not even need a compound
and cutting pad :dunno:)

Not really a snafu. The op asked me about what pad sized I used when I made my original statement and in saying this, the Meguiar's microfiber pads are listed as 5". Technically they are a tad larger than the 5" backing plate.
