question for those who own dogs...

so the family is looking to get another dog (both are maltese had to be put down over 4+ months ago due to health issues) later this year or early next year and are only going to get one. most likely a yorkie and we are deciding on whether to get a boy or girl. any opinions on which to get? also, we won't be breeding at all and will most likely get him/her fixed...

Go female, males like to hike their legs and kill bushes, flowers, etc.

although...a dog that small it may not be an issue...lol

Rescue a male, my parents, wife, grandparents and aunt and uncle all had female dogs, totaling 8 ranging from Maltese dogs to Lab mixes, me and my wife rescued a male pit mix who was a stray and wouldn't even eat out of a bowl for almost a month. He is so easy to work with and such a great dog that my aunt and uncle rescued a male pit. There are so many amazing dogs in shelters needing a place and family, all I can say is please take the time to check out rescuing a dog before buying, and don't let breed be a deal killer, I was afraid of bully breeds as a kid and never thought I would have one, but now I would never ever have anything but a bully breed.

Here is my take. Love small dogs! Always wanted a black lab,then our room mate brought home a male mini schnauzer & we fell in love with it and went and got his brother. Our springer spaniel just passed and the new pup helped the healing process. A year later we got another mini schnauzer from same breeder ( female ). We had 3 in the house counting the roomies. After she moved out, we saw a sign while visiting in laws for schnorkies and were courious what they were like. It is a yorkie / mini schnauzer mix.Yes,we brought one home with us.she looks like a blonde yorkie & really pretty dog.Our male schnauzer passed 2 years ago from cancer and we rescued a very young male puppy from a shelter that is supposed to be mini schnauzer/Jack Russell mix. Very cool dog. From our experience,males are more loving,cuddly and the girls just want attention. The mixed dogs seem to have had some of the genetic health issues bred out and seem to be healthier all around. I wouldn't trade any of our 3 for anything else,all very special in their own way. Love em all! We will replace our 14 year old mini schnauzer with another one when she passes. They are great dogs!
Be careful,we only wanted one & have 3. Would take more if we had room for them.

I like boy dogs better personally. I have had about 10 dogs in the last 15 years. I typically rescue "senior" dogs anymore. Like 7-9 years old. Give them there last years great and easy like they deserve then find another one or two.

I'm sorry to hear about your dogs... My two female greyhounds are sleeping soundly as I type and I couldn't imagine being without them.
Sadly as you've seen in another post my oldest grey "Lizzy" was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer). She's doing well now as we caught it early on, but it won't be but a matter of time before we say goodby.

We've always adopted female greys. They seem to be a bit more independent than the males, although with the male grey's I've met, they too seem docile and quite like the girls, just needing a bit more affection.

I'm all for getting a male, (which can get upwards of 80 to 100 lbs) but my wife wants to stick with an all female house. LOL...

But here is the thing, whatever you chose, it really doesn't matter... us dog lovers love our dogs and they have a special place in our hearts and homes. :)

Had a male yorkie for years had to put him down a few years ago, we miss him a lot. IMO a great dog for an adult household, our experience with this particular dog is that he was frightened of children and would preemptively nip if both kids and dog were not closely supervised. We had friends with a male yorkie and no worries with all their grandchildren, so YMMV.

I'd get a girl for some of the reasons above and just based on the personalities I've seen with them. We have 3 Maltese now and they are amazing dogs. My wife's family also has 4 Yorkie's and they are great too, but they definitely bark more. :)

You can't get just one!! We had a male Yorkie that we lost about a year and a half ago after having him for 16 years. It was really tough without him after having him for so long. We now have three "Morkies" Yorkie/Maltese mixes and they are awesome. They are all still puppies right now so it can be chaos at times/most of the time. The one that looks more like a Maltese is a female and about a month older than the other two males (brothers) that look more like Yorkies. I don't think there is a whole lot of difference between them, but the males seem to have more spunk and shorter tempers. They go from fine to totally ticked off instantly, seems like it should be the opposite right? lol

Here's our Golden's "Ice Cream Face"...the first time she got her face in an ice cream container when a pup. Now she's 2 1/2 and a wonderful dog...my wife accurately says she's "awesome". She's scary smart and uses it to her advantage. She behaves well in the car but otherwise she can be described as "spirited"...with a vengeance.

I've only had Siberian Huskies, 4 male and 2 female over the years. IMHO if you are going to fix them there really isn't much difference between the sexes, I've found they all have their own personalities. My females are just as fun,smart,cuddly, are slightly more aggressive than the males and slightly more protective of "the pack". My males could get into a fight and then 2 minutes later be back to best buds, the females seem to hold a grudge for a little while. I don't really see that much of a difference and would suggest choose the one that tugs at the old heart strings
