This white BMW has paint that is well maintained and in very good condition, except a small (12 inch square) area on the hood now has a lighter tone when viewed in good light. Tried compounding, but the problem seems to be under the clear coat.

Couldn't really tell in the photo what you're referring to, but on white paint (making it more visible) it is possible that something has stained the paint in that area and it may benefit from a cleaning. I would suggest something like Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion to see if that would address the problem.

It certainly won't harm your paint if it does not do the job. Be careful with aggressive compounding as remember when compounding you are removing clear coat...
