I wouldn't go any smaller than the 4" spot buff pads. That's a lot of rotation for the size of the pad, or smaller. Heat build up will be your enemy - be careful.

Likewise, the larger the pad you go, the less the outer sectors will have good cut abilities, the pad will become heavy with product, etc.. If you needed a larger pad, I would just suggest a BOSS G-21 Long Throw

For small tight areas, there is the Griots Garage 3 Inch Orbital Polisher, 3 Inch Polisher, 3 inch Dual Action Polisher, 3" buffer (http://www.autogeek.net/griots-orbital-polisher.html)
I thought you got a Flex PE 8??

Lake Country Hook & Loop Flexible 5 inch Backing Plate for excellent balance and control with the Porter Cable 7424XP Dual Action Polisher. Lake Country CCS 6.5 inch Foam Pads or Cobra Cross Groove 6.5 inch Foam Pads will give you many pad options to tackle any detailing challenge.

Porter Cable 7424 Backing Plates- Dual Action Hook & Loop backing plate for your porter cable 7424, The best backing plates for the Porter Cable 7424 (http://www.autogeek.net/porter-cable-7424-7336-backing-plates.html)
LC-43-073DA Dual Action 3 Inch Flexible Backing Plate
The 3 Inch DA Backing Plate is designed to offer perfect balance and support for 3 inch foam pads. The actual diameter is 2 7/8 inches, so the plate is recessed back from the edge of the pad slightly for safety. Use this backing plate with your Griot's Garage Professional Random Orbital 3 Inch Polisher.

LC-43-085DA Dual Action 3.5 Inch Flexible Backing Plate
A smaller version of our 5 and 6 inch plates, this 3.5 inch backing plate is designed for our Spot Buffs 4 inch pads. The 3.5 inch plate has a 5/16” threaded post that screws directly into the Porter Cable 7424. Use any of the Spot Buffs pads, Lake Country 4 inch pads, or Cyclo 4 inch pads to correct small areas of paint or to polish particular spots.

LC-43-125DA Dual Action 5 Inch Hook & Loop Flexible Backing Plate
Use this plate with 5.5 inch or 6.5 inch pads. The plate is large enough to stabilize the pad, but small enough to provide an adequate buffer zone between the edge of the foam and the edge of the plate. The 5 inch backing plate is ideal for the Porter Cable 7424. Use any of our Low Profile 5.5 inch pads with this plate.

LC-43-148DA Dual Action 6 inch Hook & Loop Flexible Backing Plate
The 6 inch plate is ideal for the 6.5 inch and 7.5 inch Lake Country pads. This plate is the intended size for the Porter Cable 7424 Dual Action Polisher. The 6 inch plate allows you to use a larger pad to cover more area without sacrificing stability.

Minimum, 3" to support the 3" rayon pads for glass polishing. Maximum, I wouldn't use anything larger than a 5" backing plate. The PC will correct better with a 5" than a 6" bp.

I've use 3", 4", 5" & 6" plates/pads with no issue.

I prefer the 5" set up though.

Be careful with a 3 inch and 4 inch pad on a pc, like the gentlemen paul g stated lots of heat build up in a small pad, i have burned paint with a 4 inch pc and it happened faster then i thought was possible.

It loses its dual action and becomes more like a rotary, stay with a 4 inch and 4.5 inch plate. And just respect it more then you normally would with a average 5 inch or 6 inch pad.

Well I only asked because I ordered a 6" bp but I have a 5 now which I think is fine it's just hard to find a 6" wool pad so that's why I got the bp

7" wool pad on a PC is a waste of time..you are better off using a mf pad.
