After some saving I finally got my DA polisher (Griot's). Since the backplate is 6 inch. Most of the things I read in here is get a 5 inch backplate instead. Since I am a beginner should I really change it to that size?

Yes without a doubt. I've never used the 6" backing plate on my GG6. The 5" backing plate with 5.5" pads is more effective, easier to handle on curved panels and tight areas and the 5.5" pads will save you money in the long run. While you're at it get a 3.5" backing plate to use with 4" pads for the really tight areas like bumpers and areas like pillars. Any 5" backing plate for DAs will work, but Griots has a great 5" vented backing plate that is worth the investment.

Make sure you get enough pads also: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/ask-expert-featuring-mike-phillips/88109-how-many-pads-do-i-need-buff-out-my-car.html

A sure road to failure is trying to correct an entire car with one or two pads.

OP, I was in the same shoes as you last week. Ordered a 5in backing plate and 5.5 inch flat pads, you don't need to break the bank right away but i would do at least four orange and four white pads for a car correction, the more the better.

I like 6.5 inch pads, i also like them on the griots 6 inch.

It makes the ride smoother and i just like the feel of them.

However if you are a newbie the 5.5 inch pads will be better for you, to get your skills down.

I will be able to use a 6.5 inch pad even on concave edges from experience.

But if you are a newbie the 5.5 inch pads will be a easier learning curve.

Also a 5 inch backplate makes the machine more agressive, alot of people dont talk about that, but the smaller the pad the faster the machine can spin.

I also recommend you getting the 5 inch griots garage vented plate, it has cooling holes and vents to keep your pads cooler and prevent them from failing.

pick up this backing plate and also some 5.5" pads as both mentioned above. there are several great 5.5" pad options to choose from such as griot's BOSS, buff & shine, lake country, and megs...

btw.. congrats on the new GG6, you're gonna love it!

The new LC ThinPro pads work really well with the GG6.
