I had black carpet in an Audi that was stained by road salt over the years. I used RIT dye that is sold in liquid form to treat it. I dabbed it undiluted on the stain with some success. Eventually the stain came back, but that was probably due to being on the floor panel and seeing a lot of wear. It looked good for a while, tho.

The majority of dyes on the aftermarket are temporary solutions. They will work well but they are fundamentally behaving a bit like wax, not a sealant or coating. The dye sort of loosely attaches to the fibres and the solvent evaporates away. The dye remains and is fairly water proof but it is not really bonded in place so it will get knocked off over time. More traffic will make it happen faster. I have tried to formulate more permanent solutions but it is a niche market in which most dye manufacturers have simply no interest.
