Excellent write-up Mike. Detailing an engine used to be very intimidating for me, but once you learn what to tape off and how to properly and carefully clean and rinse, it becomes a very rewarding experience.

Is the sidekick adequate enough to dry a crew cab longbed? Looking for something better then a leaf blower, the looks I get from neighbors gets annoying, I already get looks doing rinse-less washes.

I would say "no". Sure you could do it but it's more for blowing water out of things like cracks and crevices, not blowing water off of major body panels. But you could.

Just hold a microfiber towel in front of the the nozzle 5-6 inches to capture the water instead of trying to blow it all the way down a panel like a truck bed.

I'd still say get one if you don't have one, it's really a handy tool and works much better than an air squirter. Put it this way, pretty much everyone I show it or let use here at the garage wants one and I think gets one.

    Mike-
I dont have a pic with me, but with a 2013 bmw 3 sedan or a 2006 highlander hybrid, both of which have an engine compartment with a lot of plastic. Will I do any damage if I just spray APC and rinse?

For new cars, it won't hurt to look around, even under any plastic engine cover for electrical plug-ins and cover them.

Since both are fairly new, you could get away keeping it uber safe and uber simple and just spray and wipe with a quick detailer and some microfiber towels.

I think I mentioned this previously in this thread... maybe read through it again...

Thanks. I saw the earlier post. I just love the idea of foaming that whole compartment but am not sure what to cover. I will just spray and wipe down.

Thanks for the write up. There are some nice tips I had not seen before. I see you disconnected the battery. I have use the plastic wrap/alum foil approach.

Good advise ,I also cover up the alternator just to make sure I don't short anything out.
I cleaned my engine a few weeks back, love the results after cleaning.
