What's this textured surface I see on the bottom of Ford Trucks?

Good day everyone. I was just wondering what this textured surface is I've seen that runs along the bottom side of some Ford Trucks I've come across?

Do you think I should avoid running my polisher over this area?

Personally I believe Its some type of protective coating.

My Tundra has similar on bottom of my cab. I polish it like the rest of the paint.

Is it soft to the touch?

My VW GTI had something similar in a small area directly behind the wheels on the bottom edge of the rocker panels. On that car the textured area was soft and rubbery to the touch, so I didn't polish it. Since it was on the bottom of the rocker panel of what is an already very low car, it was invisible and not a big deal if it was blemished. I just kept it clean.

Looks like the Ranger line, right Jake?
It is no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.

It looks to me like an undercoating that they put regular paint over. Either that or they have one hell of a problem with orange peel.

No, not the Ranger line. I believe this one was an F-150. Don't know the year. The same texture was on my father in law's truck I polished up with the BF One Step as well.

It's a rubberized coating to help with rock chips and such. Kind of like the clear film that different manufactures use behind the wheel well openings or rocker panels.

    It's called,

    Chip Guard

I had this along the bottom of my 1969 K5 Blazer. I polished it like normal paint.

In the background you can see the custom soft top I had made for the Blazer
