Re: Available dates for 2019 Roadshow Classes

    Continued....

Requirements to host an Autogeek's Roadshow Class

I have been teaching roadshow classes since 2006 when I started the Meguiar's Roadshow Detailing Classes. I've taught classes all over America and other countries. While there's nothing wrong with a get-together at someone's house in their driveway or car garage, OUR classes are NOT casual get-togethers. These classes are the real-deal. They are intensely hands-on training as I know people learn by doing, not sitting in a chair listening to someone talk.

First - what's in it for the hosting company?

2 of your staff can attend the class - no charge
2 of your staff are able to take the class at no charge. (That's a $2,000.00 savings) - These two free tuitions go to whomever you the host chooses, this could be shop staff, the owner or friends of the owner that have always wanted to take their detailing knowledge and skills to a higher level.

Our 3-day class here at Autogeek is $1,795.00 plus you have to budget for,

    • Travel costs/Airline tickets
    • Hotel
    • Rental car
    • Meals away from home

We have companies send their employees to our 3-day class all the time but if the above kind of costs are not in your budget then this is a great option. Besides the free tuition for 2 of your staff, there's also great networking and public relations for your company's brand that naturally comes from hosting one of our classes.

What does it cost the company that hosts a class?
There is no charge to host one of our classes. I get asked this all the time and there is no charge. We are thankful for anyone that opens their doors so we can bring our class and the education and training that it provides to people across the United States and in other countries.

    Autogeek/Mike Phillips Training Certificate
After attending a class, each person receives a signed Competition Ready Certificate signed by me personally. (my credentials)

    What does it take?

In order to put on a 5 Star class, we need a facility that offers the below minimum requirements.

    Need to have:

Clean facility - A shop or garage with a large enough bay to hold two large passenger cars plus ample room for 10 people to work around each car at the same time.

Electrical power - 110v plug-ins in the facility to enable at least 10 polishers to be plugged-in and operated at the same time, 20 plug-ins is best.

Good lighting - Overhead florescent lights are perfectly fine as long as there are enough to provide a well-lit working environment.

Space for 20 chairs - While these classes are the most hands-on training classes in the industry there is a brief Power Point Presentation so a nearby bay or room for the class to assemble.

Bathroom facilities - These classes start at 7:30am and go to 5:30pm. We normally have both male and female attendees.

Parking for students - 20 students typically means 20 parking space plus parking spaces for your normal business staff.

15 people minimum - We aim for 20 people for each class and the minimum is 15. No worries though, historically all our classes SELL OUT! And as a result we end up turning people away until the next class.

    Nice to have:

Tables, counter space or carts in the bay to hold tools, pads and products.

A table or two for coffee and donuts in the morning and pizza and cold drinks in the afternoon.

    Right to cancel

If at least 15 people have not signed up and paid for the class by 30 days before the date of the class, Autogeek reserves the right to cancel the class.

The good news is historically all our classes sell out. So this is just a precaution as there are a lot of logistics involved with shipping and travel in order to put on a first class event.

    Other information needed

    Nearby airports
    Nearby hotels
Nearby restaurants - On Saturday night we hold an casual Meet-n-Greet for everyone to share their car guy/girl story and what they thought of the first day of the class.

    Frequently asked questions?

What does it cost to attend the class?

A one day class is $495.00 with a $100.00 Autogeek store credit for signing up early.

Each Autogeek Roadshow Car Detailing Class consists of 2 separate and unique days with the third day being option and offering IDA Skills Validation Testing. The classes are priced individually and each day covers different tools and topics.

Of course a person can sign up and pay to take both days. People that sign up for both days and sign up early will get a $200.00 Autogeek store credit.

What's in it for the hosting facility?
Great question. I've been teaching these types of offsite classes for over 11 years and here's what I've seen. The hosting facility gets massive public relations out of the class with their local car enthusiast market. For detail shop owners you'll get an increase in high caliber customers.

For car dealership owners you'll reach new customers for cars sales and for your in-house detail shop and even maintenance shop. All the response I've ever received from the people that have hosted one of our classes is always overwhelmingly positive.

There is no downside except we come in and take over a portion of your facility for three days. (Friday is set-up day). We are also very respectful of your time and your property and we make sure to clean up afterwards to restore your facility to the condition it was in before the class and usually even cleaner, we are detailers...

    What to do next?

If your facility fits the requirements described above, here's what you can do next,

Call Mike Phillips at 1-800-869-3011 x206 or e-mail at Mike.Phillips@autogeek.net

I'm more than happy to hear from anyone that wants to hold one of our Autogeek Roadshow Classes in their home town and I can either e-mail you more information or even send you the complete information via U.S. Postal Mail, just let me know which form you would like the information.

Also covered in the morning washing session are the non-washing procedures to do and the correct order to do them in.

    1. Wet Wash Engine Detailing
    2. Machine Glass Polishing
    3. Headlight Correction

    2: Car Inspection & Prep
This class session covers everything you need to do to a car BEFORE you start machine polishing. This includes inspecting using an Vehicle Inspection Form, Paint Thickness Gauge, Swirl Finder Lights, Baggie Test. Plus what to tape-off and how to correctly tape-off and cover-up trim, comments, tops, etc.

3: How, why and where to do a Test Spot
One of the most important steps if not THE most important step everyone should be doing before detailing a car.

4: 2-step paint correction and polishing
This class session covers all the professional techniques to correctly compound and polish paint to perfection. Multiple-step paint correction is called, show car detailing because you're breaking the paint polishing process down into isolated and dedicated steps to maximize the end-results for a true show car quality finish. This session includes tools from,

    1. FLEX
    2. RUPES
    3. Griot's Garage
    4. Meguiar's
    5. Makita
    6. Porter Cable
    7. Cyclo

    Pads - Products
The morning session includes a wide range of pro-grade compounds, polishes and buffing pads for a very well-rounded experience. You will learn how to know when to use a compound versus a medium, fine or ultra fine cut polish.

Ceramic Coatings - Waxes - Sealants
The morning session covers proper techniques for chemically stripping paint for the installation of ceramic coatings specifically. Techniques for applying and removing traditional carnauba waxes and synthetic sealants are also covered in the morning session.

    5: Final Steps
The morning session covers coatings and dressings for; glass, tires, rims and plastic trim.

    >Lunch Break<
Lunch and cold beverages are provided

    Afternoon Session - One-Step Detailing
One step detailing is also called production detailing. In this session you will learn which types of cars and other projects are best suited for an AIO type product, (All-in-One), also called a cleaner/wax. The focus on this class is how to restore a neglected car's finish to like-new condition in only one step. Also called Speed Detailing. This type of detailing is great for enthusiasts taking care of their own daily drivers or for professional detailers for their budget package and also things like dealership work.

1: Washing Techniques for Waterless Washes and Rinseless Washers
The afternoon session covers how, where, when, why and what for using either a waterless or rinseless wash. Correct techniques for both types are covered and when to use one over the other. Also covered are the correct types of wash media and other tools needed to clean a car without running water safely.

2: Mechanical decontamination - Why and how to use detailing clay and clay substitutes
Students learn the proper technique for using detailing clay as well as clay substitutes.

3: Taping-off and covering up to save time and marketing purposes
Students will build on the foundation created in the morning session as well as learn the marketing side of taping-off and covering stain-sensitive surfaces.

    4: One-step high quality detailing
Where the morning session goes over how to use a multiple-step approach for show car results, the afternoon session covers how to correctly use All-in-One products to compound, polish and protect the paint in one-step. This type of detailing is perfect for entry level detailing packages as well as daily drivers, budget details, RV's, and large vehicles like trucks and vans where the owner or customer does not want or need a ceramic coating. There are dos and don't when it comes to this type of detailing, which you will learn in the class. Everyone should have the skill set and knowledge to correctly perform one-step detailing jobs whether you're an enthusiast or you detail for money.

The Roadshow Detailing Class was absolutely fantastic. I've been waiting for one of these to come to my area, and within 15 minutes of getting the email that it was happening, I signed up for both days without hesitation.

I have been an enthusiast detailer for a number of years, and have learned what I know about the detailing craft through various YouTube videos (many featuring Mike Phillips) and through these very forums (also, through Mike). While my skills have gotten better over time, I've had a great deal of trepidation when it came to abrasive detailing or anything that involved picking up an orbital machine spinning faster than my eye can see. Among my group of friends I am the "resident detailer" - they trust me with their cars, and I knew that I would have to expand my skill set at some point to make all of our cars better than ever.

Before the class even started, I received roughly a half dozen emails from Mike himself about a week in advance, informing the class of everything we would need to be ready the first morning. I was about 5 minutes early on day one, and could already tell this was going to be serious because I was pretty much the last person to arrive. The garage setup was incredible, with beautifully laid out products that looked like a detailer's shop dream (at least my dreams, anyway!)

Mike promised us from the get-go that we would get an incredible amount of hands-on time using tools and chemicals on cars. With approximately 22 hours of class time across both days, I can honestly say - when Mike says you get to be hands-on, he means you will get HANDS-ON!!! I learned more in the 2 days of this class than I have in the last 2 years of scouring the internet. Tips, tricks, methodology, fundamental skills, advanced techniques - Mike shares ALL of it with the class. He is 100% genuine, accessible, and open to any question. If you've seen Mike in his videos on YouTube or on Competition Ready, I can say that the guy you see online and on TV is the SAME guy you'll meet in person. The other class participants are also real enthusiasts - everyone is highly motivated and incredibly careful with the cars that are volunteered for the class. I would absolutely trust everyone with the surface of my car if another class were to come to my area!

Ultimately I came away from the class with a plethora of new skills that I can't wait to try out. Now I feel confident that I know how to detect and identify issues on the surface of a car, the proper way to safely and effectively handle serious tools, how to work on a variety of surfaces and materials, and how to appropriately communicate these skills to perspective clientele.

I was fortunate that Mike selected my friend's 2010 BMW 128i (white with black vinyl graphics) for one of the final 12 cars to be detailed over the weekend. The reception from the owner and his family has been outstanding - the car has gone quite some time since its last wash (much less wax or sealant). The owners and class participants were equally shocked upon seeing the car literally changing color after removing that heavy layer of road film!

Big thanks to Pete, Christy, Axel, and Andre for helping me with literally every question I came up with across both days. Working side by side with these folks is seriously fantastic! I hope anyone who takes these classes in the future has the chance to work with them.

Huge thanks to Autogeek, I'm loving the RUPES detailing belt and the swag from the #AGroadshowNJ contest. These tools are being put to the test this coming weekend!

Finally, special thanks to Rahul at Shield & Sheen for opening the doors to us so we could use (and hopefully not abuse!) his shop for the weekend. It's a great facility and he has a wealth of knowledge.

Looking forward to attending my next class, hopefully a 3-day class next time!

I am just about back home from taking this class! This was an awesome experience and was WAY more than I expected! To fully understand, I am going to post my review/ opinion as these pictures do not do justice of what happened at this class. As I am so proud of how these cars came out!

First, I am a hobbyist at auto detailing before I signed up. I did not know what to expect, before signing up I searched for other classes closer to NJ (where I live) and there are some. I found a fairly reviewed class in Ohio, and my Dad knew a guy that gives classes in Virginia (but there is no review on that) and only thing that I kept coming back to was this class.

Next Mike Phillips, for better words, is a legend in auto detailing when you search on information on him. This led to my next concern. Since he was so high profile, I was unsure if he was really going to teach the class or have an assistant do it and he just comes in and say hi. I will tell you, Mike is there 1st thing in the morning and NEVER leaves till the class is finished. The class is supposed to be from about 730 am until 430-5pm. There was not one day that we finished before 6pm!

We only sat at our desks for about 45 minutes each day. 30 minutes for a few things that needs to be explained from a desk area and 15 minute lunch. The rest of the time is all hands on learning. Mike himself demonstrates and teaches all the techniques, not an assistant. Mike walks around to make sure you understand each procedure and shows you if you made a mistake. Even if you did not realize you made a mistake. He does not yell or act superior, he wants you to do everything right! He genuinely cares!

On the cars, we worked on a couple cars that where worth 80K dollars each, some rental cars (nothing wrong with that!), and a few nice muscle cars still worth 30k or so each. You are not working on some rust bucket or just hoods from a junk yard. On these cars you learn proper polishing techniques, how to properly handle a buffer, and how to properly wax a car. This may sound stupid, but I was doing just about everything wrong and do not mind saying it! This is an issue for myself as a hobbyist learning from friends and YouTube. There is a ton of incorrect information out there! It's all internet hearsay.

We got to use multiple tools, about 6 different buffers from short stroke to long stroke units that widely vary in price. We learned ceramic coatings and used several different brands so you can see the differences of how they apply and wipe off. This helps allow you to make the choice as to which products you like to use, and you did not have to buy them! I'm not sure if all classes get to work on 1 stage paint cars (as there getting rarer to find) but we did 2 of them!

Mike also does his best to teach you how to apply your new knowledge in a business setting!

I VERY much enjoyed this class! If I had a chance to do it all again, I would take the class a 2nd time without even having to think about it! The cost comes into play as this class is not cheap. To that comment you need to sit back and think about it, the knowledge you are learning is invaluable and will allow you to get your money back fast! I have not decided if I am going to pursue a business yet or remain a hobbyist, however, I have booked a ceramic coating for my uncles Challenger, a friends cars for paint correction on a C5 Vette, fox body mustang, and a Pontiac G8. This is just from showing them what I learned and seeing the results of the cars we worked on during class! My education is paid for already and the knowledge is now with me forever!

All I can say is THANK YOU Mike!

    -Andre

From the 2019 Boat Detailing Class

Pictures & Comments 2019 Boat Detailing Class at Autogeek with Mike Phillips

    Mike and Andre,

This was my second class with you and Autogeek. I’ve been detailing for years, as a hobbyist. Since my retirement last year, I have been encouraged to get into the business full-time. Before I would even consider it, I wanted to better prepared and equipped. I don’t post much on the forum but read and watch videos.

I was always afraid to wet sand and using a rotary buffer. I believe if I was going to do anything, I better do it right!

So with that said, I’d like to share some thoughts and observations, especially for those who have been on the fence about taking any of these great classes.

    1. Learning how to wet sand.
One of my biggest fears! You can watch all the YouTube videos you want but their is no substitute for “Hands-On.”

    2. Refining techniques.
I have sat in classes before and watched the instructor do it but had very little, if any opportunity to do it under the guidance of an instructor. With these classes, you will get all the hands-on you want. In our 3 day class, we had 13 cars and the boat class two very large vessels. I was able to see where I was either doing things wrong or just not efficiently.

    3. Having at our disposal so many great products that I have wanted to try but feasibly only have room for so much.

    4. Using various tools.
I know it’s seems a bit redundant considering above. With that said, I was able to use polishers that I had read about and watched videos on. The Griots 6” was a butt kicker as was the 3” polisher of the same name. I had always heard that they were but finally was able to use them both.

Also, being able to use the various Flex and Rupes machines. I was able to compare them and see the capabilities of each tool first-hand. It was like Christmas morning!

    5. NO SALES PITCHES!
Mike doesn’t play favorites and encouraged us to try different tools. He didn’t favor one line over another. Even if we asked to use something that was sitting on the side, he gladly allowed us. Talk about being a kid in a candy store.

Mike and Andre are constantly walking around and helping us with our techniques and skills. In the boat class, we took the windshields off the boats. What we thought would be a one-step situation to clean up some scratches didn’t work out that way. So we stepped back and Mike encouraged us to us our experiences and think about what we may have done in the past that might help.

In the end, after some testing, we used a two-step process with various products to achieve the results. We didn’t throw in the towel and accept it’s good enough. Mike pushed us to think and try.

    Be ready for hard work!
We started earlier and finished a tad later but the day flew by since it was labor of love.

Another aspect of class that may not be mentioned is the friendships that are built during those classes. Both times I stayed at the Courtyard Marriot nearby. Each Saturday night, Mike has an informal Meet & Greet where we have some dinner and just hang out. Then Mike goes around the table and will have introduce ourselves and will ask what was your favorite thing about the class or what toys do you have in your garage.

After he had left, most of just stayed and chatted. That to me was a great networking and learning experience too.

Sorry for the long post but I just can’t Thank Mike, Andre, Autogeek, and my fellow students for an absolutely awesome time and learning experience.

    Steve

    Wow, this is cool Mike.

Port Jefferson, NY is exactly one hour from me.
It is no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.
