how do I know If I have a foamed wool, twisted wool, light cut, heavy cut, finishing wool, synthetic wool, acrylic blend, etc...? I put some pictures of a few wool pads 2 of these came with my makita, of the other ones 1 says 100% wool on the back, 1 I'm not even sure if it's wool and the others just say the brand or supplier pretty much. sorry for so many pics lol
first pad looks like a medium cutting wool/acrylic blend, second looks like a normal twisted wool, third normal twisted wool, fourth looks like a light cut*for wool* electrified wool pad(meaning barbs on the fiber are removed giving less cutting ability). last pads looks to be normal twisted wool. foamed wool only lake country makes from my research.
The first two are from Malco, the soft yellow one and second to last white one are the ones that came with my makita ( havnt been used yet). By what I read so far pretty much the yellow ones that I have are for polishing. But that last one feels totally different from the rest almost like fabric from the rug in my bathroom lol
you can always snip a single strand of the fibers (like one of the twisted strands) and take a flame to it, if it melts then its acrylic, if it just burns and smells like burned hair well that would be wool, that would be the easiest test to know for sure. of course if its a wool acrylic blend some of the fibers will melt some will not. remember no wool is for "polishing" all wool pads due to the fibers will leave swirls its the nature of wool. plain wool fibers(not electrified wool) have little barbs on the fibers so they are like tiny razors so in my opinion you cannot get a flawless finish with wool. need to follow wool up with foam. i use 5.5" pads on my rotary i like being down and personal when polishing so i prefer the 5.5's vs larger pads, that and i can use them on my porter cable as well. i need to get me a few wool pads but i dont want anything bigger then 6.5"

They do have wool polishing pads though and yeah I would say It is hard to get a flawless finish with wool but it can be done. I actually bought myself some of the 5.5" white flat pads (that you sugested that way I'll only use wool to compound when needed. I also plan on getting a smaller wool pad now that I put my 5.5" pads next to my wool pads they look huge
I have to say I will miss the ease of cleaning wool pads vs. foam pads especially my new white ones
