What did they forget to do??

Just got my truck back from paint, I noticed that when you look at certian angles you can see shiney paint (original) and dull paint on top of it. There is no noticeable texture when feeling the paint.

Did the forget to polish it or ???

sry no pic's

Re: What did they forget to do??

Hard to tell without pictures, but sometimes during clear coating the final finish doesn't come out perfectly smooth and requires some compounding to correct.

In this case, as you've said, it seems like they've not gotten it perfect in that spot and haven't compounded the area to make it perfect. To check, take some strong compound on a terry cloth or foam applicator made with CUTTING foam (same foam as an orange pad or stronger) and do a test patch by hand. If it comes out nice, there's your culprit.

Hope this helps.

Re: What did they forget to do??

Where did you take it to have it painted? Just like in the car detailing industry, there are different levels of quality in the auto painting industry. Did the paint shop discuss with you any choices of options?

Depending on what you are willing to pay for a paint job, they'll either just prep it and spray it or they'll prep it, spray it, wetsand the freshly painted finish to remove orange peel then buff it out to remove the sanding marks.

Some places will require that you do the prep work and they'll just spray it for a very cheap price. Which did you choose or what level of service were you willing to pay for?

Sadly, I have seen some paint shops repaint just a portion of a vehicle using base coat/clear coat on the portion that they worked on while the rest of the car is single stage paint. This certainly offsets the look of things.

Some dealerships don't pay their employees the money they're worth which creates a high turnover rate. In this case you may not have a true craftsman working on your car which could end up in a sad looking paint job.

Some places are just plain hacks and don't care about the quality of the work.

My point is that there are tons of variables to consider when having a car repainted. You must do the research and decide what you are willing to pay to have done. In almost all cases that I have seen when a car is repainted whether they wet sanded the paint and buffed it or not, the finish is still not perfect because in a lot of cases, they are painters not detailers. Often times a high end detailer who knows how to correctly buff paint to perfection will be needed to make it really look it's best. But here again you'll be faced with the "what am I willing to pay for" question.

Maybe you could give a little more info combined with some photos because with what you've given us so far, all we can really do is guess.

Re: What did they forget to do??

It was taken to a dodge authorized repair facility, actually dealer owned facility.
The repairs were covered under factory warranty.
The entire front door was re-shot and looks good, however the rear door was blended, looking at it straight on it looks fine, when you get lower and look up you can see the different glosses, dull to shiney..

Besides the door the rest of the truck has dried buffing compound in spots. It looked good outside semi-clean, with no sun. Once I got it home and washed I spent hours getting what compound I could off, and documenting what they have to re-repair.

Not totally disgusted, I have seen worse, but not thrilled either. Its going back in tomorrow. Lets see if they can get it right.
A 4 day job is going on its 14th day.

Re: What did they forget to do??

Truck is back from 4th trip to body shop.

My question is on the panels that they blended the paint on under bright lights and at a steep angle you can see what I can only discribe as blemishes in the paint, it appears consistantly spotty until a point where it turns to original paint. You cannot see it under normal light conditions. Do all blendings look like this? or should I not be able to see this?

Also there are places where the bag (shop term ???) had fumes get under it and it left marks on the paint, almost like you removed wet celophane from the paint then it dried, again very difficult to see. 2nd part I guess is a rant, gonna have to force the shop to fix.

Man my truck is a mess! Head light lens appears to have a glue on it, mirror has been gouged and discolored, screws loose in the door panels. ARGH!

Pictures would help.

Curious.

Does it look like it went from this to this? My mom had her car worked on and this was the end result. I told it look terrible but her not being a car person, she just couldn't see the difference. So we never got it fixed.

That is horrible. Looks like a perfect chance to practice your sanding techniques.

Re: What did they forget to do??

No, I don't think so, that looks like orange peel, not the same. Standing at a distance there is no abnormalitiy visual. Its only with bright lighting and the right angles that you can see what I'm discribing.

Re: What did they forget to do??

Fumes under the bag? So over spray and the spots that they blended sounds like they didnt prep properly or buff after the blend. Sounds like a hack job to me, just sayin make them fix it right.
