I think you can make some profit if you build up a consistent client base and buy your supplies in bulk. I'm in the process of doing something similar for myself - not gonna quit my day job but I've definitely got some extra cash to spend now.
Thank you all this has been some great info... Yea i might just start mobile car wash but eco friendly and still do my detailing at home jobs also. Like wash it with eco smart then clean door jams, clean wheels n dress tires for 25 maybe even 30 since itll be eco friendly and they wouldnt need to worry about water all over the place.

That was my thoughts, I will set up a mobile wash unit (hopefully) still detail from home but leave the mobile customers with flyer/card for my regular services, monday through thursday do mobile (foam car down, wash tire and wheel face, dress tires, spray wax/detailer and clean exterior glass.
I agree that $20 is too cheap, our washes start at $30, we a fixed location and do volume
I disagree with "making no money on washes" and here's why: Most customers need a detail and dont even know it. They call you for a wash, you show up and put on your salesman hat and explain the benefits of a more thorough service. If you dont offer a cheaper "bait" service you may never get that phone call to start with. I turn customers from "I want a wash" to $150-$400 details every day
If I was paying for a car wash and saw him wash my whole car with 2 mitts without ever rinsing them I'd be p****d... Does he think I like swirls on my black paint? What a clown. Lol.
He said that they did around 20 per day I believe. It was him and one employee. If most of his clients had multiple cars at their house/work then it wouldn't be too far fetched.
That's usually how it goes for me as well. Most of my clients have a his and hers (some even pay me to wash their kids car). At 30-40 bucks a pop you can make some decent cash.
