Detailed in a city parking garage… with some open spaces but reasonably sheltered from the elements to my satisfaction
This was the 1st time detailing someone else’s car.Ultimately my 3rd detail and 2nd involving paint correction (both somewhat spot correction). It’s been a little over a year since my 1st car, a 2014 Altima, and shortly after that my clueless detailing self would start down the path of Autogeek obsession.
My friend who’s had this car for over 5 years has not ever washed or had the car detailed in over 5 years if has ever.I for some reason didn’t still at this time realize how bad of condition his car was in for some reason even if I should have known better lol considering he is also my boss at a pizza delivery store who part time delivers for the store. This started from my delivery driver coworkers messing with me haha about how I am with my car and OCD detailing. And one day he likes well what can you do with my car?Since, a good friend of mine who always spoils me on my birthday, I told him I’ll see how much I can get done in one day(12 – 15 hours) for in my head probably 1/3 or ¼price while he was working in the store. It was going to be like $50 - $75 … with the promise once a month he’ll get it washed, ideally hand washed, and definitely NO gas station tunnel.
The person whose car I detailed was not the first owner of the vehicle and it already took some damage before he got the car.I later discovered on my detailed (w/a PTG) that some correction work was done on it, probably shotty work lol.
Also the side of his car was keyed with a profane message. It was later Wetsanded (mark still there) by our store handyman. Before the 2nd day of my detail I interviewed him which he told me he wasn’t sure if he sanded it with 1500 or 2000 grit. But he told me he used the same grit throughout the entire process. He also told me he may have sanded through the clear in a couple spots.
DAY 1 (13 Hours)
After I picked up all of the dirt and nature around the car I cleaned the tires down
I started by spraying the car with P21s Total Autowash, then using D114 with 2 Wash Mitts over it, making the car very sudsy.
Kept car wet while I repeated this process repeated 3x
What I wanted to create, I thought worked out even better than what I expected recreating a two bucket wash type situation with the limitations of my environment. But the car had so much dirt I Had to repeat this process multiple times.
I wasn’t going to hit the car with the Optimum Iron Remover but when I finally broke through the dirty barrier, I saw a series of scratches down to the primer all rusty. My 1st attempt at the rust was rubbing alcohol and a microfiber.Ofcourse, it didn’t work.So I made the executive decision to take the car to an open space and spray out the (dead skunk) iron remover.Used gallon jugs to rinse that stuff off the car.
After that took the car back inside repeated my wash (only lightly sprayed the car this time with P21S) process with a 3 mitt and clean rinseless solution.(the 1st 2 mitts were long done for the day lol)
For the 5th wash I just used the D114 diluted solution by adding a gallon to the wash bucket and used a couple of my Cobra Jr. towels to pretty much rinse off much of what was left and make sure I didn’t really miss a spot of dirt.I kept the car wet because the next step was the clay bar.
Right before I took a clay bar to the car I dabbed cotton swabs into Isopropanol Alcohol to rub out what I suspect was bird droppings from who knows when that now looked white out.I did the same for buried bug, etc remains.Wiped off with towel and waterless wash.
It usually took about 3 to 5 passes with the clay bar to get to where I normally start with my car.
The panel over the trunk appeared to be so oxidized that some of that substance came off of the car when I clayed that section.
The car had to leave the parking garage for a quick emergency, so the Blackfire Waterless wash came into play there.
Even though it was a disaster and he didn’t even expect me to clean the interior being all the perfectionist I was kind of disappointed in my interior work, particularly not getting all of the stains out of the seats. But I gave myself some hard time limits on certain tasks, so I let some stuff go.
The Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant I purchased for my own car at around the 9 month mark of ownership, when I realized oops maybe I should lol put something on my black trim and moldings that’s out in the Florida sun and it was great by the way.But for this car I was working on I wasn’t expecting any miracles at all.The trim was one of the worst I have ever seen!I guess once upon a time it may have been black but was an ashy spotty light grey. It didn’t have much of an impact that you could see except close up.But I did see looking at it days later some noticeable change.I suspect over time the trim sealant worked its way in.
At the 12th hour I gave him options. We agreed to a second day which whatever I get done that day will be the end of it.So slapped some Souveran on it to live to fight another day.
Day 2 (7 hours)
Did a rinseless wash with Cobra Jjr Plush Towels. Then Car Pro Eraser.
Folded 1000 grit sandpaper into Credit Card and tried to get as much rust out of the scratches as I could without adding more damage.I goofed on one spot and scratched up the surrounding area.It was already hazing surrounding the area. But I was still upset with myself and served as a reminder to be more careful. So I picked my battles on the other areas.
Kevin Brown you’re the real MVP here on this one.
2nd time night and day doing paint correction.I ‘seasoned’ the pad 1st this time took the speed down from 5 and 6 settings to a 4 kept the pressure more even.I also worked in smaller sections.
I hit the vandalized spot with a white pad with Power Finish about 6 or 7 (I think I just decided to go on instincts with the passes).Noticeable improvement!Repeated that process on that same spot for a 2nd time.I wanted to be careful least aggressive.Got about 70 percent correction.Could’ve have made another go at it in my opinion but decided that was good enough for the glaze.
Then went after the horrendously oxidized trunk panel.Broke it up into 3 sections, same product and pad abrasiveness. On the 2nd section I did change pads.
I finished the rest of the car using SF4500 on a white hand foam pad.
Mixed 50/50 distilled water and rubbing alcohol for a quick wipe of the car.
Applied EZ Crème Glaze over the whole car.Used the short nap on the Cobra towel to wipe it off
Used Wolfgang Deep Gloss Sealant 3.0 on paint, headlights, and windows.
I turned the meter off at $125 before the start of the 2nd day and said happy belated birthday … he paid me $180 and was quite overwhelmed with the job that I did.So that was great!
Happily ever after… or so I thought. It appeared after the rain that the glaze had started to run off of the car. After seeking counseling on the forum I was hopeful it was just something that was just dripping on the car. After another rain the same problem. And the rear especially showed little to no water beading. And I do remember applying the glaze extremely thick on the top panel and rear areas to try to level the playing with what I was working with (totally my bad). So……
Day 3 (5 hours)
Rinseless wash car with the mitts.I used the Cobras to dry and combined with waterless to touch up what I missed. On the Cobra towels you could see a little bit of the glaze residue. And obviously some but not all of what it covered came back in view. But a lot of that gloss was still there.
After I washed the car I went straight to the Crystal Seal spray sealant over the paint.Gave it an hour and 15 minutes.Reapplied it.
While it was curing a second time I went after I decided to go after the headlights.Managed at least 75% correction. With combination 1000 grit then 2000 grit then 3000 grit sandpaper.I came back over that and rubbed in FG400 by hand.
After that I toped his car with Wolfgang Estate Fuzion.
The car looked better.
