Well the sanding block would have resulted in level, even sanding ... not sporadic marks in all directions -- sanding in one direction is also a good idea.

Like I said no need for the block, wet sanded over a 1000 cars, it is very easy to wet sand in a uniform manner with just your hand and yes going in one direction would be the correct way. It sounds like Michael is getting an air sander which will make life alot easier, but I still like to do it by hand.
