  1. Re: Does clearcoat get thin over time, even if you don't polish?

you suggesting both will fail at about the same time?

damn, i must have polished away most of the clear on my other car then
  2. Does clearcoat get thin over time, even if you don't polish?

my car is almost 14 years old. The clear on the roof has failed and is peeling. The flakes coming off are less than a fraction of paper thickness.

Is new clear coat as thick as several sheets of...

    Re: Clearcoating Headlights

do you have pictures? close ups?

orange peel on a headlight will cut down on light output.

When I tried clear coating headlights on my other car years ago, I could see the fine scratches at...
  4. Re: waxing every week does not prevent clear coat failure? dull clearcoat = impending failure?

    sounds about right.

My other car is 13 years old, and I think it started failing at the 12 year mark. Trunk and roof are bubbling.

It's also a light silver color, so I imagine darker colors...
  5. Re: waxing every week does not prevent clear coat failure? dull clearcoat = impending failure?

My car looked great at 5 years old too.

if only you could see what your car would be like in 15 years.... that would be a great longterm test.
  6. Re: waxing every week does not prevent clear coat failure? dull clearcoat = impending failure?

The stupid thing is that I use my garage for storage.

I would use a car cover, but it's such a pain to remove and cover again, and the dust that accumulates on it gets on my clothes when I remove...
  7. Re: waxing every week does not prevent clear coat failure? dull clearcoat = impending failure?

Yeah the paint is clearly dull. no doubt about it.

A marked difference vs the vertical surfaces like the doors. I've never polished or waxed the doors since 2007, and they look new.
    Since 2007,...
  8. Re: waxing every week does not prevent clear coat failure? dull clearcoat = impending failure?

Oh, I don't wax my car every week. I do it every month. I'm just wondering whether weekly waxing would even offer any long term protection.

I know for sure any wax does not last more than a month...
  9. waxing every week does not prevent clear coat failure? dull clearcoat = impending failure?

if a car sitting outside and waxed every week still gets clear coat failure, why even bother waxing at all?

If clear coat gets hazy, but can be buffed back to a shine, is it pretty much too late...
  10. Re: Anyone able to get Collinite 845 to last more than a month parked outside in the sun 24/7 ?

you do several more steps than me.
I'm lazy. I just claybar, then 845. done.
I really don't want to spend that much time on my car.
I'm only doing it for paint protection, because all my older...
  11. Re: Anyone able to get Collinite 845 to last more than a month parked outside in the sun 24/7 ?

Sounds like I'm seeing the exact same results as you.

My paint color is smoky granite mica, which is pretty dark.

Final rinse of the car, and the water is stuck to the paint when I try to blow...
  12. Re: Anyone able to get Collinite 845 to last more than a month parked outside in the sun 24/7 ?

my car is near-black color. I honestly think the heat deteriorates the 845 wax.

I can cook eggs on my car.
  13. Re: Anyone able to get Collinite 845 to last more than a month parked outside in the sun 24/7 ?

paint is still intact. I claybar, then wax.

I'm looking at beading after washing. After final rinse
  14. Anyone able to get Collinite 845 to last more than a month parked outside in the sun 24/7 ?

Just wondering if anyone has been able to get 845 to last more than a month on the hood, roof, and trunk panels...when parked outside in the sun all day.

When I wash the car 30 days later with...

Re: using too much or too little collinite 845

ok today I clayed and used more 845 than I usually do. did 2 coats on the roof.

2 months ago, I 845'd around the gas tank cover, and it still beaded water today, whereas the roof and trunk were...

Re: using too much or too little collinite 845

meguiars says deep crystal doesn't strip wax.

I've occasionally used Dawn before waxing, but mostly I just use a claybar.

Tomorrow I'm going to clay and do 2 superthin layers of 845 on the...

Re: using too much or too little collinite 845

    meguiars deep crystal car wash.

I only wax the top surfaces- hood, roof, and trunk.
and it's always the trunk and roof that no longer bead the soonest.

Next time I wash, I'm going to try 2...

Re: using too much or too little collinite 845

    I've read that guide.
I apply wax exactly as prescribed. I use claybar and all. Apply wax in circular motions with a 4" meguiars yellow foam pad.
I see the grease trails when waxing, but when it's...

I mean just ambient light of the sky.
