Consider a Prep Sponge in play of clay. Does the same job with the same up front investment and no worries about dropping it, just wash it off.

Looks like there's some iron from brake dust embedded in the aluminum, so maybe start with some Iron Cut or Sonax Full effect to chemically remove the bonded (and embedded) iron particles.

You can trying putting 1 (or more) layers of heat shrink tubing over the cord in area that wears to make it less likely to flex and fail.

I've seen AutoGlym High Def Wax on clearance for $20 at Wally Worlds in Ohio and Va. Looks like WW may be closing out the line.

And this week I picked up some AutoGlym HD Wax for $20 on clearance (and I've seen it on clearance in Ohio and Va). Looks like the price point is probably too high to generate enough sales for WW....
