If we talking smoothness the 6" bp is considerably smoother and quieter with the 6" and you can see, hear and feel the machine is designed around the weight of the larger 6" bp.

The washer makes absolutely no difference to the smoothness both on and off the paint what so ever but it sure as heck increases rotation considerably. It goes into hyper mode with the washer on.

I wonder how much added stress with a washer mod running on it long term would put on the motor.

From what I understand the washer mod gives more pad rotation while diminishing oscillation.

I'm sure rhe machine will stall just as easy with the washer as with out..
Does that mean a polisher with washer mod will correct less in the rcontour/concave areas ?
As we know a pad that looses rotation but still oscillates still corrects..
Or does the washer mod only effect oscillation at high speeds and doesn't effect lower speed aka stalled/oscillation only..?

Oscillation/orbit does not decrease with rotation, on the contrary it increases. For every increase in rotation there should be an increase in oscillation.

I just a open box Rupes Mark 11 and used the spring washers I had on my DAS-15. You can just see light between pad and shroud. Will us polisher if it ever cools down here ....

On a random orbital tool, the oscillation is driven by the motor. The rotation is non-driven and is a function of multiple things such as friction applied to the pad, centrifugal force, and drag in the bearing. So modifying the tool by disengaging the anti-spin shroud is going to have the most dramatic effect on rotation when the tool is in free air. It may offer some benefit with smaller pad sizes on slower speeds, since the force imparted on the pad that causes rotation may not be dramatic enough to fully overrride the anti-spin shroud.

When used with the recommended pad sizes and with the recommended speed settings (4-6 ES version / 3-4 Mark II) the net effect on polishing is very small, if any. Because the oscillation is driven by the motor, and the anti-spin shroud only limits rotation, there is no real change or effect on the former.

Re: 5" backing plate on the lhr21 mark 2

    Sorry for the ignorance....

I just ordered my Rupes LHR 21 Mark II. What is the washer mod? Ive heard of it, but I don't know what it is.

I'm very familiar with DA action on vehicles, but this is my first Rupes.

How do I go about doing the washer mod, and what size washer do I need? Etc. I'm all about more rotation. I don't push down hard on my machines either... I try to let the machine do most/all of the work in the way it was intended. (without causing additional heat as well).
