Poorboys Trim Restorer and Black Wow Comparison
Poorboys Trim Restorer and Black Wow Comparison
I was generously sent a sample of Poorboys Trim Restorer by mchess1 (thanks Jon) to compare with the Black Wow that I already had.
Now for the Patient - My 2004 F150 with faded black plastic cowl and bed rails.
Here is the current condition of the black plastic cowl on my truck.

I applied Poorboys Trim Restorer to a foam applicator pad and wiped it onto the right side cowl.

You can clearly see how faded the plastic was. PBTR restored it back to a nice black color.

Next I applied Black Wow to a foam applicator pad and wiped it onto the left side cowl. Black Wow also restored a nice black color.

Next I wanted to test both products out on the bed rails of my truck. My Bed rails were not as faded looking as the cowl, but the top edges that stuck out past my tonneau cover had areas that started to turn white as can be seen below.

I placed a strip of tape on my bed rail and applied Black Wow to the left side and Poorboys Trim Restorer to the right. I then removed the tape and took a picture to show the difference compared to the untreated center area.

You can see that both products darkened the remaining black areas of the plastic, however the white areas were unaffected, which I was not really surprised.
Product observations
Consistency:
Poorboys - Clear watery liquid
Black Wow - Orange Gel
Smell:
Poorboys - Coconut type smell
Black Wow - Watermellon Jolly Rancher type smell.
Ease of application:
I think Poorboys was a little easier to apply due to it’s watery consistency compared to the gel consistency of Black Wow.
Price:
Poorboys - $14.99 for 12 oz.
Black Wow - $24.99 for 4 oz.
Overall both Poorboys Trim Restorer and Black Wow restored the faded black plastic to it’s original black color. Neither product restored the white areas of my bed rails that appeared to have lost it’s color, which I expected.
I don’t know how either product will hold up in the long term, but based on initial impression I think I would choose Poorboys Trim Restorer over Black Wow due to it’s ease of application and less of a greasy feel after application. Maybe my opinion will change after seeing how well each product holds up over the coming weeks. I guess time will tell.
Thanks again to mchess1 for the Poorboys sample. :dblthumb2:
Re: Poorboys Trim Restorer and Black Wow Comparison
Thanks for posting your review Mister B. The front cowl really looks great.
You mention price above and then don't mention it again when you talk about your decision. Price seems to be a big difference for those two products.
Keep us in the loop on the durability of both products.
You may want to layer up another layer of PBTR on the bed rails and see if it makes any difference.

Good point! Price is a very big difference at nearly twice the price. I forgot to add that part.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
Re: Poorboys Trim Restorer and Black Wow Comparison
Thanks for the excellent comparison/review Mister B! I have never tried the black wow so your information is much appreciated. Both products really made the cowl look great for now. Major price difference like Jon said... The black wow would really have to impress in durability to turn me away from PB-TR.
Thanks again and I look forward to the updates :props:
Oh, almost forgot... Learn from my mistake... I'm not sure about the black wow but I would grab a terry cloth towel and buff the PB-TR side real good before any rain hits it.

I definitely will do that. Black Wow acted the same way for me. The last time I used Black Wow on my bed rails I buffed the heck out of it to make sure there was not too much residual product, and it still ran down the side of my bed after it rained.

My calculations say it's 5x the price
Re: Poorboys Trim Restorer and Black Wow Comparison
I was estimating at the bottle for bottle price, not ounce for ounce.

It seems to me the $/oz is more representative of the cost of application
Re: Poorboys Trim Restorer and Black Wow Comparison
Very nice review, I look forward to the durability results. I use PBTR all the time and had thought about trying Black WOW, now I might not have to. THANKS!!
Re: Poorboys Trim Restorer and Black Wow Comparison
I've tried both (thanks Dwayne) and definitely prefer the Poorboys Trim Restorer over Black Wow. The Black Wow looks fine to begin with, but it doesn't retain that look, and it seems to do something similar to "outgassing". I haven't had that problem with the Poorboys product.
Thanks for the review!! :xyxthumbs:
