Smile Reveiw - LC Glass polishing kit

Note: I’m not a professional but very passionate about keep my cars looking as good as my skills allow.

The car I was using this on is a 99 Acura TL with 170,000 miles. The windshield is original and 10years old. You can imagine what it looks like. There was a perfect arch of scratches and pitting. I tried using 105 and a 5” lc orange pad which did nothing for the windshield. The windshield just laughed at me.

I bought the LC glassing polishing kit based on research I have done. I actually bought the kit because I wanted to try the smaller 4” pads.
I know you guys love pictures. With my limited skills I didn’t expect great results and didn’t take any pictures. My apologize.

On to my review of the glass polishing kit.
I decided to try the polish on the passenger’s side of the windshield 2 weeks ago. I cleaned, used a razor blade and clayed the glass. I slapped the backing plate on on the PC using the supplied adapter and set the speed to 4. Then I sprayed some water on the glass, spread the polish and began working the polish. I did this with moderate pressure. I should have taped up the rest of the car because it splattered everywhere (not a big deal because I was washing the car anyways). I worked a small section about 6” by 48”. Working the polish up and down and then front to back. The polished started drying so I sprayed it with a little water and bumped up the speed to 5. Everything was going good but time was running out (I’m a husband and father. Priorities right).

I stopped working on the glass as I need to wash the car. AS soon as I sprayed the car with water I noticed how the side I polished was noticeable as the water was actually sheeting off. I finished washing the car and checked out the glass from the inside. The passengers side was crystal clear other then the pits.

Now my issues
There were a few of scratches from parking at work. So, I was kind of exited because I could try out meg 105 with my new 4” orange pad. I did the first couple of spots at speed 5 with a little bit of pressure and was impressed. I then hit another spot working in a 1x1 area. I saw what I thought was dust. As I as getting ready to shut down the PC the backing plate goes flying off (the pad was still touching the so it didn’t go very far). The foam from the backing plate tore right off of the plastic piece that attaches to the PC. I was upset because I only used it for less then an hour.

I email LC and they send me out a new backing plate with no questions asked. The weekend comes and it’s beautiful out. I decide to do the rest of the windshield. I start on the other section of the passenger’s side. Same process as above but this time I start seeing dust after less then 10 minutes of use. I shut down the PC. The pad started tearing again. I e-mailed LC again. He asks me my process and I describe it as above. I have not heard anything again and it’s been almost 2 weeks.

I wanted to get the rest of the windshield polished. So I used gorilla glue to fix the backing plate. I used it last weekend to polish the driver’s side. I have to say I’m really impressed with the product (other then the backing plate) and my work. The windshield looks great. I can actually see out the windshield when the sun hits.

Bottom line I’m very pleased with the leveling discs. I think I could have gotten away with just the Disc and some Cerioum Oxide.

Who else makes a backing plate that accepts the 4” lc pads?
I hope this wasn’t to long winded.

Re: Reveiw - LC Glass polishing kit

Nice review ... after the glass is where you want it to be, consider Aquapel to seal it in. I know Edge makes an adapter for 4 inch pads and thought we carried a 3 1/2 backing plate too.

Thanks for the response.
I've never used aquapel. Does it dry completely clear? Like I said my windshield has a lot of pits on it. I've used rainx and wax with good results but these products leave a white residue in the cracks.

Re: Reveiw - LC Glass polishing kit

I had the same thing happen to my foam backing plate with the LC kit. I just switched to my regular 4" backing plate and continued on without an issue.

Aquapel will dry clear. Its not a wax or sealant its a chemical coating and you will never use RainX again.

I really hate rain x. I'm going to give aquapel as try. Now to see what I can do about the backing plate. Hopefully the guy at LC replies.
