PC extension adapter...

I have no clue what the correct term for this is, but I could've sworn I saw something about it on the forums... The backing plate gets pretty hot most of the time when using the PC, and I was wondering if anyone had any information as far as some extension adapter is concerned... something 1-2" long which will screw into the PC then onto the backing plate

Basically a 2" cylinder with a male and female threaded end

Anyone here make one, bought one, etc...

I had a 5/8 to M14 adaptor made for my rotary...why do you need a PC adaptor? Just wondering

I've noticed the PC makes the backing plate extremely hot and there's a lot of melting going on. A guy on autopia I think melted the backing plate so bad that it was curved all around and the pad looked like it went through a house fire... I just want something to give me a little distance between the backing plate and the... I know a metal adapter will still transfer the heat, but a lot less... oh and my meg's 6" backing plate is now not holding the pads good at all... when I pull them off it's only slight resistance, feels like I'm taking a pad off of a table top...

now, why do you need an adaptor for a rotary? and why M14, which rotary do you have ?

Here are some pictures of what it looks like.

The reason I need a 5/8 to a M14 was because of the backing plate...the backing plate came from Europe.

Oh so your Metabo is a 5/8"??
Where did you make this?
That is exactly what I had in mind, and I might have actually been thinking of these pictures when I thought about the adapter for the PC.
Did you do it yourself or had a shop do it for you?

I own my own machine shop so I had my machine shop do it for me...the thing is that the Metabo comes with a 5/8 spindle extension and I had my machien shop copy the exact same extension but thread it differently to fit my 5/8 Metabo rotary. Yes my Metabo is 5/8.

How much would your machine shop charge for such an adapter? Obviously I want one for the PC, about 1" long and minimum possible o.d.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of the adapter on your rotary? I know you did it just to fit the backing plate, but do you feel a difference when the pad is further away?

You can PM me all the info since I'm willing to order/buy from you for a reasonable price.

Thanks.

Gussing you may have to worry about the aditional loads on the extention, on a rotery goes in a circle but a PC goes in a circle and side to side (you know what i mean) that would put lot of strain on the extention i would think...but i guess you can try it and find out...

This is why I think the Edge adapters go bad, but this will be a simple piece of metal and I doubt it'll cause any damage, at least not for a while

The extension can be made that's not a problem the thing is the price, I would have to ask one of the guys to take a look at this because they are a few things to take in to consideration...example the amount of stress that will be going through the extention, agpatel21 does have a point about the type of movement. On the rotary it's quite simple, it just spins. Like I said anything can be done it's just a mater of price that's all.

now do I see any benefits, well when I first used it I thought it would feel wierd but it actually feels very confortable. I don't even notice a difference, it does have some advantages...like side mirror sections, I can manipulate my rotary a little better and having more clerance in between helps the manipulation. Oh another good one is when doing sports cars and they have a spoiler....depending on the type of spoiler if it's a low one it will help if it's a high one it could restrict you...either way spoilers are no fun when it comes to detailing . Another advantage I've noticed is I can plase my hand closer to the pad and becuase of the gap I don't have a fear that the pad would catch my fingers.

Disadvantages...mmmm...oh I got one...when your doing the lower panels and if it's a really low vehicle it takes some playing around with the machine and not hitting the ground or ending up with bleeding nuckles....mmm...can't think of another one I'm sure I'll come accross another one and I'll try to remember.

Either way, the backing plate that I use is wicked and well worth the bleeding nuckles...works for me and I'm happy with it

I'll get back to you as for the extension for the PC but to be honest I'm not sure you will like the price...to build one peace is $ but to build hundreds/thousands is another story...but I'll let you know. My way of thinking is anything can be done in this world, it's just a mater of how much you are willing to spend for it....but that's just me.

In another note, I have the Edje connectors and I have never had a problem with them...what happend to yours? Just wondering.
