Using the 7424 around Rock Chips

This is a question I've been meaning to ask for awhile. I haven't used my 7424 a lot but I was wondering when using it around an area with rock chips or deep scratches should I cover up damaged area? Before I started with my hood I took a little piece of the blue tape and covered up a few of the rock chips because I was scared I might damage that area more.

Would I possibly chip off more paint if I don't cover up them up?

The PC doesn't generate enough force to chip off paint, otherwise it would probably be pretty hard to use.

I think the only thing that might happen is that if the chip is deep enough you might see some compound get stuck in there and make it show up a little more.

I've used the PC on cars with chips before, going over and around them and no problems so far.

In my own experience, no is the answer
That said, you still need to be carefull on bubbly paint as it will reveal a spot in your paint, but as far as rock chips, it won't alter the appearance of them for the good or for the worse
Disclaimer: This is my experience on two-stage paints. I have not had first hand experience on single stage paints, and results may vary...

I've used it on single stage paint with chips and it works the same way with no problems. Usually a chip on any finish is going right through to the undercoat.
