Depends on the pad, a backing plate type pad like LC, eventually it will become a UFO at speed 6 lol, speed 5 is better as the velcro and backing sometimes start to come undone. Edge pads no trouble at that speed.

so at this time, my understanding seems to be that in general, its not about the pressure you apply to the machine during use...but rather the pad and polish combination that is actually doing the work...

Generally speaking, what can we do to minimize dusting besides cleaning and priming the pad?

Yeh. But, some pressure may equal some more heat which is what causes polish to break down.
Bottom line is your first few cars are going to be trial and error. It's frustrating but a fairly quick learing curve.
Here's something that might help at first. Time your polish breaking down (almost disappear) with a kitchen timer. Time it again, etc, etc. Then set your timer for each area you do. You'll be in the ball park with this system and will eventually get a feel for it and toss the timer.

maybe then in all honestie...my car would be a good first car to do b/c its brand new and all it needs is at most XMT 1...so i wont really need any pressure...

anyone think this might be a good idea?

What color is your car? Have you looked at it under some Halogen lights? Because its new doesnt mean it has no swrils or marring. If its in good conditon then go ahead with XMT1 and LSP.

The color - Fiji Blue Pearl

Car - 07' Honda Civic (soft clear coat)

I haven't had it under halogen lights but it has very light hairline scratches/swirls from washing (i wash correctly but i over wash)...and im not sure what marring looks like...
