Buffing after color sanding question!

First post and a question!

I've read through many posts in this folder and don't see anyone talking about removing 1500 or 2000 grit color sanding scratches.

Now I figure that a rotary buffer would be be the best bet, but if you HAD to use a PC 7424, what pads and compound/polish would you use? Even if it was going to take a long time to get anywhere? I have plenty of time.

This isn't going to be done on a new vehicle. I've had to do quite a bit of touch up painting on the hood and roof of a 93 Dodge. I've sanded the entire roof with 1000 grit and plan on doing some more sanding with at least 1500 grit.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I believe the consensus you'd get is Megs M105 or Menzerna Power Gloss, and a LC Purple Foamed Wool Pad.

From all of my hours scouring the AG website, I missed this. From the item description:

"Foamed Wool Buffing/Polishing Pads are capable of removing 1500 grit scratches, leaving a smooth finish with no hazing and few, if any, compounding swirls."


Sounds like the ticket! And from what I have read here, the 6.5" would be better than the 7.5", right? A case where smaller is better...


Do you think XMT Intermediate Swirl Remover #4 might work with the purple foamed wool pad? I have some already on the way, but I don't mind ordering some Menzerna Power Gloss if I need to.

Edited: now I see there is a 3.5" foamed wool pad. I think I'll go with the 6.5" unless I shouldn't.

Thanks... so if I'm following this information correctly, all a person needs to do is wet sand down to 3,000 and then follow up with only a mildly abrasive polish using a LC white pad or something? Then go from there with the grey one?


Sounds like it would work. I did go ahead and order a foamed wool pad and a LC yellow one, along with some Menzerna Power Gloss.

We'll see how it goes!

An update:


I ended up using an LC yellow pad and Menzerna Power Gloss (followed with XMT #4) and it took the 1500 grit sanding marks out. It took a couple of applications, but it worked. Hooray!

Depends on if you have Patience I have removed 1500 with a PC using a LC orange pad with Meg.83

Now most will tell you that won't work but that is because people want instant results.

I guess instant results are good if someone is in the detailing business. I'm not, and I had plenty of time. I actually had pretty good luck with just an orange pad and XMT #4, then, even I, got the need for a little speed and jumped to the yellow and Menzerna Power Gloss. I liked using the #4 better, due to the fact that it breaks down to powder MUCH better than the Menzerna. The Menzerna makes a mess....

i used a cobra orange pad and some meguiars #2 and i think 2 passes got it so if u use #1 it could go faster bud i dont know anything about Menzerna or xmt polishes yet so i cant give you any tips

Good to know! Back in the day on laquer paint, I used something called Meguiars Mirror Glaze. That was following some kind of generic buffing compound. I mean, back then, I think Meguiars only offered the one product and that was IT!

Now they have umpteen different products with all sorts of code numbers, which appear to be in no logical sequence. That'why I like XMT right now.... 4, 3, 2, 1, finishing glaze, and then wax. I might try Meguiars if I knew wtf to use and when.... lol
