Tape off ridges when polishing ?

OK here is todays question : When polishing with a PC7424 and an orange pad with Menz IP should you tape off the ridges on the hood, door panels, etc to keep from wearing down these vulnerable areas ? OK with white pad/Menz FP II ?

Cheers,

Bruce

Unless you're really going at an edge aggressively with the PC everything should be fine without taping. Just take care around those areas as the paint is usually thinner.

Forgot to mention will be using 6.5" LC CCS pads with 5" bpl (also have a 6" bpl if it makes a difference.

No tape with the PC just unweight the pressure and don't dwell over those areas.

Re: Tape off ridges when polishing ?

People usually don't tape because they fear damaging the plastic with a PC, rather to prevent staining if some polish or wax were to end up on it. If you still want to prevent this but don't want to tape, you can apply trim or molding dressing before polishing. If polish or wax residue does get on there, you can wipe it right off and reapply the dressing with no stains.

Re: Tape off ridges when polishing ?

Thanks for the help. I attcked the hood this weekend. took out most of the scratches. The Menzerna IP kept flashing off/drying/ dusting. The hood was warm but not hot. The IP seemed to cake a bit on the edges of the orange pad and scratched the Autbahn protective film on the front edge of the hood so had to tape it off to prevent more scratching. The Final polish worked fine (white pad) staying wet and "breaking down" like it should. Anybody eklse have this problem with the Menz IP ?

Cheers,

Bruce

Re: Tape off ridges when polishing ?

Menz IP is a tough product to use with a PC. I actually tried using it again this past Friday and had very similar results that you had. I used it with a rotarty polisher and it was much easier to use. I couldn't believe that the IP dusted more with a PC than a rotary... but if the pad is caking with product, try using a little less. I found using 4 dots of polish around the middle of the pad to work best. After a few panels it probably would be a good idea to brush off the pad or wipe off excess product with a towel.
