Rental Car Fun...

In preparation for tomorrow's Detailing 101 Class I used my rental car to set up a display for removing defects out of clear coats using DA Polishers.

The rental car is a 2010 Chrysler Sebring and it has HORRENDOUS scratches running in straightlines in the direction of the length of the car BUT I had a hard time capturing them with both sun light and in the Studio so I dampsanded the deck-lid and then used two different combinations of products to remove the sanding marks.

After removing the sanding marks the entire hood was wiped down thoroughly using Griot's Garage Paint Prep and then I took the below pictures...


I dampsanded the trunk lid using #3000 Unigrit and then in one section I used Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover with a 6" Purple Kompressor pad followed with a 6" Green Kompressor Pad and then wiped with Griot's Garage Paint Prep.

For the other section I used XMT Heavy Duty Swirl Remover #4 Polishing Compound with a Yellow 5.5" Foam Cutting Pad followed by Pinnacle XMT Fine Swirl Remover #2 with a 5.5" White Polishing pad and then wiped with Griot's Garage Paint Prep.

There is no wax or paint sealant on any of the polished sections...













Being a rental car it was clean when I picked it up but I went ahead and wiped it down anyway to inspect for Above Surface Bonded Contaminants so I would know if the car would needed to be clayed or not and it actually felt pretty smooth...

So we induced some Above Surface Bonded Contaminants so our students would be able to feel the difference between paint with a rough texture and paint that feels as smooth as glass. Plus there's the experience of feeling clay drag over paint that's contaminated and then feeling it glide effortlessly as the contaminants are removed.





The first part of the class will be a Power Point Presentation to gain head knowledge and then the second part of the class is hands-on and it's the combination of the two types of learning that provides the skills, experience and confidence that each person can take home with them and then use over their lifetime when working in their own garage on their own cars.

Is the PC all taped up because you wanted to er on the side of caution with the damp sanding process and electricity?

I hope the rental car company donated the car for your classes because I'm sure they are going to get one heck of a clean car back after class is over.

No. On the Porter Cable, the handle is what holds the plastic housing on to the tool, if you take the handle off the plastic cap will slide off and so to keep this from happening since I don't tend to use handles on tools I tape it on.

Don't you have to return the car in the same condition you received it?

Mike, do you think the PC XP handles the 6" Kompressor pads ok? I've been considering trying those but was afraid the PC XP didn't have enough power for them.

All, ok.

I just upgraded to the new PCXP, but I have not used it yet. Since I also do not use the handle, maybe I'll get a short bolt to keep the plastic housing on.
