1965 Mustang GT Convertible - Detailer's Paint Coating

1965 Mustang GT Convertible - Detailer's Paint Coating

Here's the walk-around video I took of Shawn's 1965 Mustang. Note I took a video before we worked on it and then after on it showing the results.

In the before video I rub my hand on the paint and you can really hear how bad the overspray is. In the after video I rub the same section and there's not a sound to be heard.

    Overspray & Swirl Removal + Detailer's Paint Coating - 1965 Mustang

Here's what we did to last night's project car,

    • Machine Decontaminate to Remove Overspray.
    • Machine Polish Paint.
    • Machine Prep the Paint.
    • Hand apply Detailer's Paint Coating.

    Before
Looks good but the paint doesn't jump out and scream shiny new paint job!

It was CLOUDY outside when Shawn stopped by so it was pretty much impossible to get take pictures of the holograms in the paint but it is swirled-out.

Here's the same picture above except I've drawn a circle around one of the holograms to make it stand out a "little" better. Look at this picture and then look at the above picture and you can see it. These are everywhere in bright sunlight.

With the flash of my camera...

    Process

    Mechanically Decontaminate Paint
The car had overspray on all of the body panels and really bad in some areas. To remove the overspray paint we're using Nanoskin Autoscrub Pads, "Medium Grade" on Porter Cable, Griot's and Meguiar's dual action polishers with the Nanoskin Glide for a lube.

    Remove Swirls
To remove the swirls we're using Pinnacle Advanced Swirl remover with a variety of pads and tools. Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover is a versatile polish that works great on a wide spectrum of paint system and with any pad/tool combination.

    Flex 3401
Here's Ed and Shawn using Flex 3401's with Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover to remove swirls, stains and scratches. You can also see Matt in the back using a Flex 3401 on the trunk lid.

Here's Tim aka 57BORNTORUN giving Shawn some pointers...

Chemically prep paint for paint coating
After we removed the swirls, next we machine applied Detailer's Coating Prep Polish to remove any polishing oils or fillers off the paint surface before applying the Detailer's Paint Coating.

To do this step we're using dual action polishers with 5.5" Lake Country Flat Black Polishing Pads on the 3-4 setting. Remember you don't need a lot of power for this step but it makes it easier to move the pad over a panel if the speed is around the 3-4 setting versus the lower speed settings.

Here's Craig chemically prepping the driver's side front fender...

Here's Matt chemically prepping the back of the car...

Here's Chris chemically prepping the hood and front fender. Across from him is Shawn wiping the residue off...

Here's Jeff wiping off Coating Prep Polish...

    Apply Paint Coating
After the Coating Prep Polish was removed it's time to apply the Detailer's Paint Coating.

    Here's a tip...
When starting out with a new/clean applicator of any type, mist a little spray of the Detailer's Paint Coating onto the face of the applicator to prime or moisten the applicator. This will lubricate the surface and make the initial spreading of the paint coating easier.

Priming a clean, dry applicator pad with Detailer's Paint Coating

Here's Robert Diterlizzi applying the coating with a gold finger pocket while Chris is ready to wipe off any high spots.

Tonight's Thursday Night Makeover featured 2 cool cars. On the mustang we used the new DP products, which I will add are very easy to use when applying and buffing off. Best of all it last years not months. It made the mustang paint gloss right up, fantastic product in my opinion. On the Pontiac we did a one step correction followed with Max Wax. Thanks to Mike and everyone at Autogeek for hosting the Thursday night makeovers.

    Thanks Mike,

What was more rewarding than creating a finish worthy of this classic car was showing the owner and his buddy all the cool products, pads and tools most of us consider the norm for car detailing,

Neither Shawn nor Ed had ever seen nor used,

    1. The Baggie Test
    2. Nanoskin Autoscrub Pads
    3. Nanoskin Autoscrub towels
    4. Porter Cable DA Polisher
    5. Flex 3401
    6. Griot's DA Polisher
    7. Meguiar's DA Polisher
    8. Rupes Bigfoot Polishers (used on the Firebird that night)
    9. Detailer's Paint Coating Prep
    10. Detailer's Paint Coating
    11. Brinkmann Swirl Finder Light
    12. Variety of buffing pads
    13. Quality polishes that removed the swirls without leaving any haze behind

That's a lot of new products plus the techniques that go with each set of tools. I'm happy to say both guys as well as everyone else did a great job while also having a lot of fun.

Here's what the owner of the Mustang, Shawn sent me in an e-mail the next day,

Thank you so much for all the knowledge you imparted to me last night. It was such a fun and informative way to spend an evening and it was a really nice group of guys.

So yeah... that's pretty rewarding. I'm confident Shawn and Ed will go on to show a lot more people in their circle of influence how to properly detail a car whether it's a cool classic like Shawn's Mustang or someone's brand new car.

The Mustang came out real nice.Shawn and Ed were easily trainable and I hope they come back to work on other cars.
