Live Broadcast Video - 1965 Plymouth Valiant - Extreme Makeover

1965 Plymouth Valiant - Extreme Makeover

Paul's 1965 Plymouth Valiant 100
This is a recent resto-rod with a new paint job but there are still holograms left from a wool pad on a rotary buffer. This is a great candidate for an "Extreme Makeover". It was originally a straight 6 but now it has a warmed-up 318 made to look like the 273 high performance engine that came in a 1965 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S. This is only the second paint job this car has ever had and there are only 42,000 original miles.

Here's what the paint looks like in the sun....

Swirl City!
We're going to remove these swirls and create a true show car finish!

Here you can see water spots and swirls inflicted by a rotary buffer...

Holograms inflicted by a rotary buffer...

More holograms in the paint on the hood and everywhere throughout the paint...

This is a cropped out section from the above pictures so you can better see the water spots in the paint along with the holograms...

Holograms and water spots on the trunk lid...

Far shot of the passenger side with the sun reveling the swirls in the vertical panels like the B-Pillar...

Ouch! Kind of hurts your eyes to look at this...

Sun's too low to really show the swirls but you can kind of see them, point being is they're there and we need to remove them...

This half-circle scratches are from machine sanding, they're called pigtails...

As you can see the paint is filled with swirls, scratches, water spots and even pigtails from machine sanding.

Our job... remove the defects and restore a show car finish...

First up will be our Test Spot, that's where we'll dial in a process that removes the defects to take us to 95% or better correction.

First thing we're going to do is a Test Spot. For this we're going to use,

Porter Cable 7424XP DA Polisher

Correction Step: SI 1500 – Super Intensive Polish (PO83) with 5.5" Cyan Hydro-Tech Foam Cutting Pad

Polishing Step: SF 4000 – Super Finish Polish (PO106FA) with 5.5" Tangerine Hydro-Tech Foam Polishing Pad

Here's the results after making 8 Section Passes for the Correction Step and 6 Section Passes for the Polishing Step.

Quote:
The definition of a pass
There are two definitions of the word pass as it relates to machine polishing with any type of machine.

Single Pass
A single pass is just that. It's when you move the polisher from one side of the section you're buffing to the other side of the section you're buffing. That's a single pass.

Section Pass
A section pass is when you move the polisher back and forth, or front to back with enough single overlapping passes to cover the entire section one time. That's a section pass.

After we dialed-in and proved our process everyone began buffing out the Valaint. More experienced people used the Flex 3401 and Flex PE14 and people new to machine polishing worked with the Porter Cable, Meguiar's and Griot's DA Polishers.

Re: Pictures: 1965 Plymouth Valiant Extreme Makeover

I'd like to personally thank everyone that attended last night's Extreme Makeover because it's the team work that takes place on these project cars that really makes the difference.

Thank you!

Awsome photos and a great turn around. Its nice to see such a young kid with patience taking his time and buffing out a car.

Re: Pictures: 1965 Plymouth Valiant Extreme Makeover

Thanks Max, Mike & AG for the opportunity to work on a really cool car with some really cool people.

Thanks Paul for trusting us with that Comando!

This car came in pretty bad shape but nothing that couldn't be corrected with a little TLC. For many last night, this was their first time working a machine to polish paint. As you can see, todays technology allows the average person without experience to turn out an excellent finished product.

Kudos to all.

I try to really to take good pictures to really share the event plus the before, process and after pictures for everyone that can't be here but wishes they could...

Takes a little time to sift through all the pictures, pick out the best ones, then rename them, crop them, resize them, upload them and finally insert them.

Most my write-ups have between 70 and 100 pictures...
