I dont feel that a shotgun is best for home defense for a couple of reasons.
1. Size -- it is not easy to conceal and something very hard to pull from under bed in case of emergency. Kids can also usually get to these easier as much more visible.
2. Spray -- the farther you fire in a shotgun, usually there is more spray or spreading of the penetration point. If your loved one or children come around the corner on an intruder you want dead center only.
I find for home defense a good .45 caliber handgun with a reasonable size barrel and Glazzers or other stoping bullet to be the best choice. Easily concealed, easily grabbed, and not as easily found by assailant. Add in a bullet that is designed to stop at bone, and use the shaddering effect to reak complete damage is a better option personally.
And while I agree the sound of a shotgun is harrasing and scary at the other end, your not always going to want to alert someone to your position and abilities.
