We plan on going back soon and renting some more to find what we both like. I'll probably get the Remington 870 20 gauge for home protection as well as a couple of hand guns. Nothing more intimidating then the sound of a shot gun being cocked back.

I think a shotgun is the best tool for home defense. For one you dont have to aim nearly as close. Most people will recognize the sound and be gone. You dont have to worry about rounds going through two walls and hitting a family member. The only downside I see is maneuverability.

I guess you could get a few of those shotshells for handguns?

Mossberg makes an 18.5" home defense barrel for the Remington 870 along with other tactical parts like pistol grip. Havlin Sales & Service - Mossberg Gun Parts . Hope this link is OK since not auto related. If not please delete .

OOOOoooo pistol grip, have you order from them before? The gun dealer should be able to get them pretty quick.

No, never ordered from them. I've got the Mossberg 12 gauge and bought the short barrel at a local gun shop. Combine that with double "0" shot and the plug out it's pretty rude. I've had it at the range and saw what it can do. Jeeeze. I've only shot it from my hip with my left hand on top to hold it down. I'm half afraid to shoot it from my shoulder. May not be as bad as I think.

I dont feel that a shotgun is best for home defense for a couple of reasons.

1. Size -- it is not easy to conceal and something very hard to pull from under bed in case of emergency. Kids can also usually get to these easier as much more visible.

2. Spray -- the farther you fire in a shotgun, usually there is more spray or spreading of the penetration point. If your loved one or children come around the corner on an intruder you want dead center only.

I find for home defense a good .45 caliber handgun with a reasonable size barrel and Glazzers or other stoping bullet to be the best choice. Easily concealed, easily grabbed, and not as easily found by assailant. Add in a bullet that is designed to stop at bone, and use the shaddering effect to reak complete damage is a better option personally.

And while I agree the sound of a shotgun is harrasing and scary at the other end, your not always going to want to alert someone to your position and abilities.

In Florida the law was recently changed, before we were not allowed to shoot if they had their back to you and were moving in a direction "out" of the crime. Now we are allowed to BLAST 'em and ask question later. Sure we have to be scared for our lives, but if someone is in your home late at night (without invitation) then I believe it is my right to ASK QUESTIONS LATER !! I gurantee I wont be in your home uninvited and stealing your hard earned valuables or looking to harm your family. I expect the same courtesy and will enforce it as necessary.

Rule number one-A dead man can't sue or counter your story to try and weasel out of his sorry excuse for existing.
Also living in a Town home we sleep up stairs and they creek so no matter what they know were I am. Vise Versa. Down stairs is just a wide open area so having spray isn't a bad thing especially if I'm using sound to try and pin point were he/she is with no visual. We have NO KIDS and don't plan on having any so no issue there.
