If you detail for a living, then you must find ways to increase your profit margins. One way is to use more expensive products and charge the customer more for it.

It's not good, bad or ugly. It's business.

Most customers are not going to know the difference between products as they are not educated on them...now if you up sell a detail saying you are going to use X brand product and will last 7-8 months..you cut your throat...they will feel no need to call you for that time period....

on a well preped car a lot of products look great...

here is another example..and no offense to AG by any means here....

say you tell a customer I will use a great beauty wax...and will charge you 30 extra to use it..and you tell them it is the best wax going..you use Brand S..which is a great beauty wax...but not a very durable one..but durable..and say 2 months later the wax is closing on it life span and car does not look like it did when you first did it..they may feel taken...and you promoted it ....

I would up sell services more than products..they can relate to that...

it is a hit or miss thing...

I would use what works best for you and the customer...

this is my take on it

Al

As a detailer, my thought would be the cheapest product in bulk giving the best bang for the buck initially, so they would come back for more and often.

As a avid owner of sportcars, I would pay a premium for the highest grade offerings of products I know and love. That said, I have NEVER found a detailer to date that delivered what I did as the owner. Why ?? Because you dont skimp or even consider it on your own cars. I have seen more than one detailer "cheat" a little.

Change subject ... I stopped going to dealer for oil changes, because I could not watch them and see they used the high grade oils and filters I bought and provided. Now I visit a little place, still pay similar, and get to watch them and thus "feel" warm and fuzzy. I would need to do the same with a detailer, especially after paying a Pinnacle or Zaino or Zymol premium.

A lot of the high dollar customers you have to actually talk down to products you a) have or b) use/have experience with. Theres so many people I run in to where I work who are stuck on a certain name brand and totally rule out another less expensive but equally if not better alternative just based on cost. If you're paying more, it has to be better right?

I am learning more and more everyday no matter what you charge their is someone who will pay that price because it is the "best" and most expensive, Just have to go find the right customers then. And yes i say use the most expensive and pass on the cost.
