Per:Wills.WindowsAndWheels Request...My Version of a "Sun Gun"...
Wills recently posted his magnificent DIYer version of a "Sun Gun". The idea is to convert a 12v rechargeable drill motor into a less costly "Sun Gun".
Here's Will's thread:
http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/...nder-30-a.html
Not trying to hi-jack his thread, I posted a photo of my DIYer, causing him to request a look into the "guts" of mine, since mine was hard-wired...So here goes:
I call it:
Bob's Brillante Como El Sol Pistola®
{I found a: Somewhere around 20-25 years old 12v rechargeable Skil drill motor laying around in one of my junk boxes. Of course, being that old, the rechargeable batteries no longer held a charge. Thinking a little, I thought: Why not try to "hard-wire" it. Following is a pictorial of that conversion. There are additional photos in my (FUNX725) album ...}
NOTE:In some of the later photos, I attempt to show the differences in a couple of light sources on the same surface areas of my pick-up.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's the original drill motor:
Here it is disassembled with all extraneous, unneeded parts/wires removed, and some of the "new parts":
The "guts":
I scabbed the transformer from an old computer, and the quick disconnect (which is fused) from a defunct Battery Tender:
Putting it all together resulted in the finished product...Along with the original carrying case!:
Finally had a sunny day (sorry,no overhead sun shots this time of the year in OHIO):
Photos taken in the completely darkened garage...
The difference between a "regular" 35w halogen and the patented Solux 35w halogen (the same bulb in 3M's Sun Gun).
"Regular 35w halogen" first, the Solux second:
Photos using my "Sun Gun" with the "regular "halogen:
Photos using my 1000w halogen stand:
Photos using my "Sun Gun" with the Solux lamp:
All-in-All:
I believe the Solux lamp provided for: A more "True Daylight" lighting effect.
This was a enjoyable DIYer project....Just another way to convert a non-useable 12v rechargeable appliance into a useful "Detailing Tool". (I may not need mine for detailing purposes, though. My vehicles never gets swirls/micro-marring )
That, and it being a true cost-saver, IMO:
Total Cost (USD): $10.93
-Drill(with carrying case)...............$ 00.00
-Replacement Cord....................... 00.00
-Halogen Lamp............................. 7.95
-Lamp Base (socket, optional)......... 2.98
(Perhaps, also, a couple of dollars worth of gasoline running up to the local electrical supply house for Solux lamp and mr16 socket)
Thanks for viewing!!

Very nice!
I have been wanting to try this since the other thread.
I need to procure an old cordless drill first though...

That's really cool Bob. I like the difference in the "darkened garage" pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks.
I think the: "With Solux lamp photos"....really look like the "outdoor-sun-shot"....The Dark Cherry Metallic paint scheme shows similar 'hues', IMO.

Very nice job man. Thats cool you were able to do it with no batteries. Dont you love the Solux? Its SO much easier now for me to really see the paint, even if i'm working outside and have a lot of indirect sunlight around the area im working...where that USUALLY drowns out my brinkmann or LED light....the Solux bulb just keeps shining strong though
