Good write up from someone that owns a wholesale dealer for Chevron:

"As to the cost of refining and delivering diesel fuel. Diesel fuel costs the exact same amount per gallon to transport via pipeline or tanker as does regular gasoline so this is not a factor. Diesel fuel actually costs less to refine than gasoline so in a free market it would be cheaper than unleaded regular. Politicians (primarily but not exclusively left-wing Democrats) and environmentalist wackos have destroyed the free market in motor fuels in the United States and as a result have severely restricted supplies. Diesel cars and trucks have gotten a lot more popular in recent years as result of escalating fuel prices because they get better mileage. In a free market oil companies would respond by building additional refineries to produce diesel fuel. In America today, it is absolutely impossible to acquire all the permits necessary to build a motor fuel refinery (unless its ethanol). There have been no new refineries built in United States of America that produce either diesel fuel or gasoline in the last 30 years. We are now in a situation where, in addition to importing almost two thirds of the oil necessary to keep this country running, we currently import 13% of the refined gasoline and diesel that this nation consumes every day.

Diesel consumption is rising faster than gasoline consumption. Our refineries are maxed out and we are now relying on foreign countrys refineries to keep up with our demand. As long as we keep electing Democrats who keep appointing left wing judges willing to block or stop construction of new refineries because environmental groups file endless requests for environmental impact studies, we will never again build new refineries, nuclear or conventional power plants, or the updated power grids that this nation desperately needs to replace the half-century old antique grid that currently delivers electricity to all of our homes.

You think diesel is expensive today? You ain't seen nothing yet! After four years of an Obama or Clinton presidency, you will long for the days when your electricity bills, water bills, and motor fuel prices were what they are today."

You must think that Bush, with his close connections to BIG oil, has struck some sort of a deal with them to keep fuel prices low? While at the same time BIG oil reaps in record profits year after year along with the underlying oil service companies(rigging, etc.)? Don't think so! Republican or Democrat if fuel prices don't hit $5.00 or more per gallon in the next 5 years I will be more than suprised. While at the same time they will be getting subsidies from taxpayers. It won't make any difference which party is in Office, Big business calls the shots. It's the Global thing.

I can remember 5 gallons for a buck.

I didn't write that, it was from a Chevron dealer who was being asked why diesel is so high. Just a few years ago diesel was cheaper then regular, now its 15-30 cents more then premium here.

I personally don't care whose in office b/c either way the country is @#$%^@ . I deal in Capital Markets and I know just how bad it is.

Great article in Car/Driver this month too ... I believe the author was Csaba Cesar or something to that tune.

what people dont realize is the factories would take 3-4 years to retrofit to pull more diesel from oil. It would take far less time to build new plants, and nobody wants/allows new plants do to other environmental issues.

well, it's obvious...diesel is more fuel efficient...then you by less fuel from them...and they don't want that...so they raise the price to the point where it is pointless to buy a diesel, unless you are doing some heavy towing...

you could be right about energy bills going up really high...looks like U.S. is following Germany, where they pay 2-3 times more for water then we pay...and that's the only way to make people start using water efficiently...

By the way, it sounds like you are republican...

It seems like ya'll know about Europe a good bit and know that diesel is much more popular over there. If you watch one of the newer top gears or fifth gear (can't remember which one) but they try to take the new twin turbo BMW diesel car to find the cheapest diesel in Europe (which happens to be in Poland and its only a few cents cheaper) and they try to do this on one tank, but ends up taking a tank and a quarter (from England to Poland). What irks me about this though is they mention that the cheapest gas (regular or diesel) is still in the middle east and its going for pennies over there. Maybe its just my ignorance, but I see no reason why we are paying so much and they pay very little. I know the majority of the oil is over there, but processing it and shipping it here to the states shouldn't be that much.

I remember when I was in Aussie and NZ over 7 years ago and they were paying about 2-3 dollars a gallon over there than. I recently talked to a Australian gent in the airport when our flights got delayed and he said they are paying 4-5 dollars a gallon there now. I know Japan is close to 6-7 dollars a gallon last I looked too... Its just insane and I really see no reason for it except to fill the pockets of the greedy.

the other issue with diesel, to be a cleaner burning solution the cars and its systems must be kept top notch and in perfect working order. Because most states no longer have forced emissions testing and the such, it could easily become more degrading over time here too.
