Im getting ready for my first winter since opening my business and am curious how other business owners in our proffesion make money during the winter or off season.

Dependent upon your location and winter weather, you could consider plowing as a supplemental income.

Being from FL I never really thought about that... Good point.

I've still managed to make it work if the customer has a heated garage. That's really the only way to make it work. Once the temperature gets below 50 degrees it is pretty unproductive to be polishing anything. I charge $10/hr for every degree under 55 that I have to work in. Some people will pay it, but winter is definitely a pretty dead time of the year for a mobile detailer.

Re: How do you make money in the winter time??

This will be the first winter at my new shop. I have gotten involved in some other forms of work that should increase in the winter time.

I will be pushing my commercial wheelchair lift service and repair services pretty hard. Nice thing here is that a lot of people are very active in the summer months (including those in wheelchairs) and during the winter months, tend to hibernate into the comfort of a warm home. This leaves more down time for their wheelchair accessible vans to be serviced and repaired over the winter months.

I am also involved in some restoration jobs that will provide some income through the winter months. I also am not apposed to getting a part time job somewhere if need be to survive the winter.

Re: How do you make money in the winter time??

I live in Alberta so it can be -50 Celsius some days. I dodetailing part time but i wish there was a way to make it work. We have a cash wash across the street but spending 5-10 hours there doing a detail might not be appreciated lol

Re: How do you make money in the winter time??

There are a couple things I can think of...

1. Get in with a car/boat/motorcycle storage facility to provide detailing over the winter months while the vehicles are in storage. It offers an instant client pool that you have access to. You only have to move your equipment and products in and out once. Plenty of these places are heated. The people who utilize these facilities are likely to want their vehicles looking good. After the detailing mid-winter, they will probably only need a waterless wash, LSP and dressing before being picked up in the spring.

2. Paintless dent repair. This has been talked about a lot here and the intro cost is pretty steep.

3. Wheel restoration. A lot of people have dedicated winter and summer sets, and they always want their summer set looking perfect. The wheels are already off the car. It's a good option for people who don't want to drop $500+ to have their wheels powder coated or only want one wheel refinished. The set up and materials are cheap. This would be an easy place to up-sell a wheel coating like CQ or OC. Only trouble would be finding a heated space for the paint work.

Learn clear bra's. I also have a remote start and a window tint guy that I can profit from as well.
