@Mike Phillips. Check it out: Meguiars hosts 13 Detailing 101 Classes per year.. If an average of 25 people attended each class that would be 325 people per year..

Multiplied by 14 years of continuous Detailing clinics, that brings a total of 4,550 people who've been fortunate enough to learn and get hands on training from some of the best people in the world of auto detailing.

And that doesn't even include the Advanced Classes or TNOG!

Much thanks to Meguiars for their great generosity throughout the years. Thank you, Barry Meguiar.

And much thanks to Mike Phillips for coming up with the idea to start hosting the classes in 1st place! You certainly left a cold trail burning, and that's something that shouldn't be overlooked because things don't always continue to strive after such a departure.

Thanks to Mike Pennington, Mike Stoops, Jason Rose, and now Nick Winn for making sure the Detailing 101 Classes live strong to this day without ever missing a beat.👍🏽

@Mike Phillips. Continued success to you out in Florida.. I think it's safe to say that there's alot of grateful car guys out there.👍🏽

Thanks for doing the math and you're right, that's a lot of classes and a lot of people.

For a couple of years I was holding the Detailing 101 classes 3 and 4 times a month. My heart was in the right place as I like to help others but it left no weekend time for my family and that wasn't fair to them. To Meguiar's credit the decision was made to hold 2 Detailing 101 Saturday classes per month and 4 Detailing 102 classes per year. If they've reduced the Detailing 101 classes to 1 per month that's a change that took place after I left and also a good idea.

The TNOGs actually started out as WNOGs as they were held on Wednesday nights. I started attending a Men's Bible study at my church on Wednesday nights and moved them to Thursdays.

Barry and Meguiar's are all about education as is Bob McKee I might add.

I appreciate the due credit where credit is due, something I practice as a way of life.

I can still remember the day I asked Mike Pennington about holding a Saturday class and how when he said "yes" it changed my life forever. I moved from my job at Meguiar's as the Corporate Writer to Internet Technical Specialist. I was given permission to write my own job description, which I did, and Meguiar's gave me everything I asked for including working from home and a raise.

I agree, they've kept the classes going strong.

Well at least there's probably a lot of guys that know how to detail a car and also a lot of guys that have gone on to not only become detailers in this industry but a few are even "personalities" that have made a great name for themselves.

This weekend is our annual boat detailing class so now we provide education and training for both the automotive side of the industry and the marine side of the industry.

I had the opportunity to meet Jason at NXT east, a nicer person you could not meet! So now I have been trained by all the best! Mike Phillips, Jason Rose, Kevin Brown, Mike Stoops, and my good friend Rod Kraft! Doesn't get much better!

@Mike Phillips. 3-4 Detailing 101 classes per month in the beginning?! Wow, that truly is putting your heart into it..

It sounds like you were motivated to achieve a level of success that even you probably hadn't initially envisioned... I say that because of how grateful you were to get such positive support for the idea. There's nothing like getting that kind of overwhelming positive support to achieve our personal goals/ideas when we decide to actually speak up and present them to others like that.

That kind of support can set a burning desire in us like nothing else. It's a powerful motivation to payback and show our thanks and appreciation for something that really meant alot. Thanks for sharing.

... I've been very fortunate to stumble upon/re kindle this "hobby" we know as detailing.. It's allowed me to meet some of the nicest, good hearted people I've ever met. You probably couldn't find so many inherently nice people if you actually tried.. I'm sure a great majority of the people reading this understand exactly what I mean

My favorite quote is from Zig Ziglar and it goes like this,

"Help enough other people get what they want in life and sooner or later you'll get what you want"

I remember when I first started detailing cars there were really no good resources of accurate how-to information, this would be back in the mid-1970's. The Internet had not been invented so there were no discussion forums and even though I bought all the books on both car detailing and car painting, (the car painting books always have a section in the back on sanding and buffing), I never learned anything that I could actually take out into the garage and put to use on my own cars.

I tell this story in an interview with Dennis Gage here,

    Dennis Gage interviews Mike Phillips

So from my experience growing up trying to find "good" information and a passion to help others be successful when tackling their own car detailing project plus my mom and dad instilling into me a strong work ethic - it was and still is real easy to over work or be a work-a-holic.

So when car clubs in SoCal would contact me and ask if their club could schedule a Detailing 101 Class for better or worse I would schedule them a date for their class and without even trying I would fill up sometimes every weekend with a class.

For what it's worth... this was the wrong thing to do and I would never do it again. It takes away too much time from your family when your kids are growing up as well as personal time with your wife. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

But yeah, normally I'm a work-a-holic as I would guess so is Jason Rose, (just follow him on Facebook and see how much traveling he does for the industry). I also think people that are attracted to the car detailing industry also tend to be over achievers and thus work-a-holics and while I think it's better to be a work-a-holic than a bum my advice to anyone after reading this thinks this describes them then here's a single word to take to heart...

    balance

Be sure to have balance in your life. Make time for the spiritual side, your family and work. If you do it in that order you'll have balance and you'll also be healthy and happy.

@Mike Phillips. You said it. And it makes total sense.. There's a big difference between that good karma line from Zig Ziglar and over working yourself for people who are basically just passing by through your life and never led you to believe otherwise... Nobody's perfect so we've all experienced at least a little of that ourselves somehow.. But you gotta nip it in the budd! And fast.

My father tried to get me to listen to Zig Ziglar back when I was younger... It took me long enough to eventually find him on my own. Truly inspires nothing but the good within ourselves. It's impossible to not be in a good mood listening to that man speak. Same with Les Brown.

Oh, and we must thank Al Gore for inventing the internet, because if it wasnt for that, none of us would know who any of these awesome people are!
