Chalky Milky Black

I am still polishing the 4runner. My work schedule limits the amount of time I get to polish.

Anyway, I have polished the passenger side of the 4runner. Before I started polishing I noticed the paint appeared chalky or milky under direct sunlight or halogens. I thought the polishing would get rid of it. The swirls and spiderwebbing are gone. The reflection of the halogen lights on the paint is clear and crisp so I do not think there is any significant marring. However, there is still a chalky residue on the paint when in direct sunlight and under the halogens, although it isn't as bad as it used to be. The paint is uniform in color so I do not think it is a cc problem. In the shade it looks great. I have used IP, 85, AIO, and Klasse sealant.

I bought the 4runner used so who knows what the previous owner did to it, at least he had perfect service records on it.

chalky paint usually refers to oxidation. Some Toyotas use single stage paint and thus no clearcoat for addtl protection. If it is chalky it should polish up but becareful on just how much paint is left. This might be a good reason for those measuring devices.

I contacted toyota and they claim it has a clear coat. I went back over my work and it is looking better. Maybe I am being hyper-sensitive and unrealistic. I took some pictures and the paint looks good. I appreciate the responses and I will post before and after pictures.

I would use an old-fashioned rubbing compound to get the milky appearance out of the paint. You can get some at wal-mart cheap!
