I'm no expert at professional detailing, but I wouldn't pay someone $500 to show me how to detail a car. I would pay a professional detailer to detail my car and give him a nice tip to let me watch & ask questions, but in all reality you won't hurt anything if you approach with a little common sense and just do trial & error in addition to reading all you can on forums like these.
