Is this clear coat failure or ????

Detailed a pretty neglected 2008 Thundra over the weekend and noticed a few patches like this on the truck. The defect feel rough but did not see any cracking or microscopic failure. For budget reason this was not a paint correction job but wanted your opinion.

Yes it does! Paint overall looks good except for widespread water spots.

Since you've determined that the does indeed have a clear-coat then it does look as if it's beginning to snow signs of failure or possibly breached while trying to remove surface defects...

I can't remember the thread but Mike Philips describes clear coat failure as cloudiness in the paint. I to had this question after i used M105 thinking it was a defect in the paint many years ago. My advice is to stop in your tracks. Don't compromise that area any longer with anything harsher than a black pad and wax. Live with it as long as you can until you break down and paint the area. There's nothing you can do to restore the lost clear coat.

Use a chemical cleaner like DG 105/501 or KAIO on it, just to see if it helps remove the cloudiness, if you get any paint transfer then you're already through the clear. If you have it, I would try some PO85RD and finishing pad on it to see if it helps at all while removing an absolute minimum amount of clear.

    Has it been repainted?

White is Single Stage w/no clear coat-per toyota [Archive] - Toyota Tundra Forums : Tundra Solutions Forum

Mods can u leave this here before u merge it into the thread about white paint with hazy spots thread? just want to get this info out to others that have had the same debate.

i got this from toyota customer service today:

    Dear Mr. XXXXXXX:

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

We appreciate the opportunity to address your inquiry.

The Super White paint applied to your Tundra is a single stage paint coating. Vehicles painted with non-metallic colors have no clear coat finish. Paint colors that are available in a metallic or pearl will have a clear coat finish.

We hope this information has been helpful.

If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us Toyota Help (http://ssomail.charter.net/do/redire...toyota.com%252 Fhelp%252Fcontactus.html).

Re: Is this clear coat failure or ????

Well FishinCricket you just taught me something. The truck was not repainted so I am guessing that I am dealing with a single stage.... weird! That may be showing how much of a novice at determining single stage vs....

I was not asked to do paint correction on the truck so did not actually use pads and all. I noticed the defect in several areas and told the gentlemen that I was going to have to research it. It is the first time I see this, so the next thing for me to do was to bring it to the attention of the expert

So what can be done about this?

Brings about a good "newb" question! How to properly determine rather than guess single stage vs. clear coat?
