outdoor detailing. dust between steps?

Hi all,

Last weekend I spent Saturday doing my first detail with all my new gear from Autogeek. I went through a 2-bucket wash, iron-x, clay, Klasse AIO, and Opti-Seal.

A problem I ran into was that I was doing the work outside in my driveway (only place to do it!) and kept finding a light layer of dust/grime on the car after each step. For instance, after I clayed, when I was preparing to apply the KAIO, there was grime on the hood again (and again after the KAIO and before the Opti-Seal). I assume it was just from the wind carrying stuff from trees, etc.

My understanding was that the importance of doing a wash before running through a detail was to make sure there was no grime on the car at all. But how do you guys deal with it if the air is constantly depositing new grime on the car as you work?

For next time, I am thinking that I will keep a bucket of ONR and wipedown each section before I work the next step. I think this should work, but thought I'd see what other people have come up with.

If the car is washed, a QD should suffice. At least that's what I use. ONR would do the trick though.
