What's in Collinite 845?

What is in Collinite that makes it so durable? Is it as durable as something like Duragloss 105 or Zaino Z-2? Is it a wax or sealent?

I believe it's a wax, just an extraordinarily durable one.

Sealants generally last at least a year.

In my experience #845 is more of a sealant than a wax. It is ultra durable and most can easily get 4-6 months out of 2 layer application.

Can I ask what sealant you are using and getting a year of durability out of? The most I realistically get is 6 months. After that I am never happy with it and need to strip it off and start again as it fails to bead and sheet like I think it should.

I should say sealants are generally advertised to last a year, never gotten that much out of mine either

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Mr. Phillips classifies it as a hybrid-wax. Wish I could remember the thread, but you could do a search on hybrid wax on this forum and see what you come up with.

Re: What's in Collinite 845?

I've always got the inkling that it's a carnauba wax with various synthetic sealants mixed in. It's certainly not just your run of the mill carnauba wax, and it's certainly not just a sealant due to the carnauba content.

this is correct -it's a polymer and carnuba mix....

Re: What's in Collinite 845?

I would also be willing to bet its a just a good quality sealant with a decent amount of carnuba content. It's all in the secret sauce If your willing to put in a little more effort try some #476 or #915 paste. Lasts quite a bit longer! Three coats of #915 got me about a year of protection on a garaged daily driver. I also like to top all my Duragloss jobs with a coat of #845. Adds a nice warm glow to the somewhat sterile look of DG's sealants without to much extra work.

What really amazes me about #845 is how long a bottle lasts if properly applied. It seems to last forever!

Re: What's in Collinite 845?

I find myself agreeing with Mr. Mike Phillips on his "classifications", found in his following Article:

The Difference Between a Cleaner/Wax and a Finishing Wax

The MSDS for Collinite's:
925 Fiberglass Boat Wax/845 Insulator Wax...only lists the following as a hazardous ingredient:
Name...SOLVENT: (ONLY) PETROLEUM HJYDROCARBON (DX 3641 NAPHTHA)...CAS# 8030-30-6.

{Usually...If a product contains any man-made/synthetic ingredients...they'll be listed under the hazardous-ingredients
as a poly-dimethyl/poly-amino...silicone/siloxane...something-or-the-other...
I don't see any of the sort so listed for Collinite 925/845.}

No matter, IMO... Both 925/845 are excellent waxes!

FYI...You can always give the Collinite folks a call, if you'd so desire:

Hope this helps some.
