With aio's if your gonna apply by hand I'd be using a mf applicator to get the most cleaning ability out of the aio. Have a few of them though as you'll notice the pad will start to get filled up with dirt your pulling off the surface of the vehicle. And yes you can apply with a mf towel.

Re: applying aio by hand

You can apply them with pretty much anything, hand foam applicator, MF hand applicator, MF towel, or regular pad on your polisher. I personally like the hand foam or MF applicators.

Re: applying aio by hand

how many applicators does it take to do the average vehicle 1-2? do you ever have to clean on the fly? or just switch out for another?

I use the same 3"x3" foam applicator to do the whole car....make it very very slightly damp, then just a light line of AIO diagonally, fold, and off you go.

When you've done the whole car, lightly mist the applicator you used (without adding any more AIO), and wipe and immediately buff the windows. Makes them very clean and slippery (water flies off, better than Rain-X).
