Its about the wind while driving flowing over the hood, roof, and rear lid, less chance of swirls with a straight wax strokes compared to circles all about path of air flow......

So if that is the case why would you go top to bottom on the sides of the car instead of front to back also? Hope Im not asking too many question....

the easiest rule of thumb is to follow the way air flows against and around the car. I wax/seal from front to back on top and sides. Going up and down would give me a hernia. I got a little garden chair on wheels, and I work panel to panel back and forth. The reason, circles and scratches are much more apparent when going diagonally or circular, and nobody can truly control a small piece of sand that might have blown in.
