    1992 Honda Paint

I'm not sure how to approach this, a buddy of mine wanted me to clean his Civic Hatchback up and I agreed, sight unseen. Got it here and I noticed lack of shine and when I rubbed the paint it's coming off on my fingers with every swipe. These cars were a basecoat/clearcoat correct? I won't be doing anything to it than removing some, what appears to be mold, and road grime from a wash and possibly clay. Just don't want to ruin something by being less than knowledge on paints. Thanks guys!

Careful, the clear coat may be gone. I had a 1991 Acura Integra and the top surfaces (roof, trunk lid, and hood) lost their clear coat about two years ago. I have noticed that a lot of civics from this era have the same condition. I suspect that's what you're dealing with here.

    Couple questions;]

    Original paint?

    What color?

    Pics?

As mentioned that generation and previous (not to mention numerous future ) years had horrible clear coat failure.

That's originally what I thought. But when cleaned with CarPro eraser, it did take some of the white off initially, but then I could actually see a little shine. So i taped off a small 1x1 section and polished it with a cheap HF foam pad I had and some leftover CG VSS I had and single stepped it. There is definitely some clear coat there! My garage lighting is awful so bear with me.

It could be single stage white. That year has two whites if you look up the paint codes, one single stage and one with clear coat.

We had the earlier body style and I'm pretty sure it was single stage white too.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll do some more research on the two, and see if I can find which it is.

    Re: 1992 Honda Paint

I detailed a 2006 Honda Civic about a year ago.
The car was ten years old, but only had 26,000 miles on it.
As I began to wash the car, starting with the trunk, the paint of the vehicle was coming off in my microfiber towels.

    I could not believe it.
It did this on about every panel of the vehicle.
I tried every micro fiber towel spec I had, and every type of rinseless wash I had, along with some detail sprays and spray waxes.

    This vehicle was a nightmare.
It took hours just to complete the wash process without taking paint off the vehicle.
It looked good when finished, but I will never do that again.

The vehicle was kept clean during the ten years via gas station tunnel washes and AutoBell.

Here are some terrible 50/50 shots i got after doing a test spot. The sun/angles were not cooperating at all. Not to mention the 25 degree temperatures in South Carolina.
