Minimums safe on paint opinions
I know that there will be a lot of different opinions on this but here's the question :
What do you feel is the minimum GSM in order to have a "paint safe towel"?
For example i was once told that 400gsm or higher is safe, and that is info from a well respected detailer that a lot of you and i know ( not Mike who i hope chimes in).

Well, to paraphrase something I quoted in another thread, since towels have a base or "ground" that the fluffy fibers are woven through (think of it as towel rebar), you want a towel that's thick enough to keep you from rubbing rebar on the paint.
I think that occurs at about 300 GSM. Of course 360, 400, 550 are even better, I guess. If you have those cheap 50 cent towels that you can basically see through, that's going to be bad. And again, the fiber construction has a lot to do with this, as well as single-plush, dual-plush, etc. etc. etc.

For the exterior of the vehicle, I use 380g/m Cobra Gold Plush Jr's.

For minimum safe on paint, the Costco towels are perfectly ffie depending on the application. I use cobra gold plush Jr's as well for removing wax and what not. I actually use Costco towels to level coatings as well since I just dunk in apc. I've never had a problem with that, I definitely would advise for safety sake to test the towel with qd on a door jam to test.

If you're limiting the metrics that can
determine if a MF-towel is "paint safe",
or not, to only minimum GSMs...
then I'll go with 370+.

Rub a towel on a CD. If it doesn't mar the CD, it's paint safe.
