Re: Needing advice on removing vinyl wrap adhesive

Just to wrap up, job done, removed rest of the adhesive from car roof today. Couldn't get hold of 3M adhesive remover or rapid remover (I'm in aus) so tried wax and grease remover, still no luck. Ended up using De-solve it to remove most of the adhesive and DA polisher with maguiars compound (and a whole lot of girl power!) to finish the job. Lot of effort but really happy customer in the end 😊adhesive removed with no marring etc, attached before and after pics to this message

I would use a wax and grease solvent..something like a pre paint wipe down.. and a plastic razor blade.. Put the solvent in a spray bottle.. spray lightly to wet the glue .. take the plastic razor blade and scrape the surface clean.. wipe clean with a clean microfiber.. may need to go over it then with the orbital and some light compound to remove any surface imperfections..

    Hi,

Just needing some help with removing adhesive left over from vinyl wrap. The car roof and bonnet had been wrapped with 3M vinyl wrap, the owner removed the wrap recently and a large amount of the adhesive has been left behind (all over boot and bonnet). My feeling is this was caused by:

-Car being parked in the sun frequently
-Vinyl being removed with incorrect technique (no heat gun was used, vinyl was peeled off at a large angle to the surface etc)

Anyway, my job is to fix it! Have completed the bonnet so far, need to do the roof over the weekend, and some other small sections here and there. Just wanting some advice given the following:

-Tried removing the adhesive with four different solutions: Goo Off, diluted white vinegar, lighter fluid (Zippo) and WD-40 (all recommended by several people online). For each, left product on the surface for a few minutes, then did my best to rub off using microfibre cloths.
-While this helped removed some, it didn't remove all of the adhesive, so I resorted to machine buffing it off using slow speed setting, lambs wool pad and Maguiars Ultimate Compound.
-For remaining stubborn spots, more Goo Off/compound in spots did the trick.

Bonnet turned out well (considering paintwork was swirled/some gravel rash from before the wrap was initially applied roughly 2 yrs ago), some swirls but difficult to tell if these were here to start with.

Anyway, considering the tough time I had (took around 2 hrs to do the bonnet, was my first time doing a job like this though), and the fact I want to minimise the chance of marring the surface when doing the same on the roof (and other small sections of the car), just wanting some feedback and advice on how to better tackle the roof, considering the huge amount of adhesive left (there's literally a film over the entire roof).

Thanks in advance Link to photo of roof: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6416ftreay...34891.jpg?dl=0
Have you ever tried a product called "Speedy 500" made by Kent Industries?

It is a bodyshop product and it is hotter than Acrysol that they also make and sell and in my opinion a better body solvent wash down product as it removes Tar, Grease Road Paint, Glues and Adhesives and about most anything else you just need to be careful when using it but it is the best thing I have ever used. It isn't very expensive either. You will have to locate a Kent Industries dealer to purchase it and they service many body shops in your area?

Thanks, might try see if I can source some of that "Speedy 500" stuff you mentioned, for next time.

Some people recommended a plastic paint scraper to help remove the adhesive but I just couldn't, was too worried about what it would likely do to the paint underneath! Took longer the way I did it, but ended up with a nice paint surface underneath once all the adhesive was off

If you use the Speedy 500 solvent it will soften the glue and you can use a plastic squeegee to scrape off some of the heavier areas of glue, Be careful but it should work just fine as I have done this with vehicle graphics over the years.

You will need to polish out the paint once you remove the glue to bring it back to it's original appearance. Good luck on your project,
