Even with the 3000 paper with foam behind it is still not enough cushion to keep the actual backing plate from making contact. You can see that the foam is pretty much the same depth as the hook and loop material on the plate but once you add some downward pressure the foam on the sanding disc collapses and the hooks on the backing plate will make contact with the surface beneath it. Thats why you need a foam interface pad between the sandpaper and backing plate.
