Newer GM Clearcoat
I have read that the newer GM clearcoat is incredibly hard, specifically 2009 forward. Although I've retired from detailing I have an old customer begging me to polish his 2011 Caddy CTS which is black. His previous CTS (a 2008 I think) was not a problem, it was charcoal/gray and normal pads & polishes worked well.
I won't do this until the temps here drop below 80ş, which may be December, but I'm wondering if the clear has changed that drastically with GM products, specifically Cadillac?
I'll use the Griots polisher and a PC7336 with a 4" pad for small areas. My question is this.....Is the "new" GM clearcoat that hard where I may need microfiber pads and a new polish as compared to my trusty Menzerna? If so I'll need to raise the price to accomadate for "specialty" products for this particular car. I may be concerned about nothing but I'd like your opinion. Thank You.

Re: Newer GM Clearcoat
I just compounded/polished my 2010 Camaro. As it is the only car I have ever polished, I didn't know about easy or hard clear coats. Most people say that a "hard" clear coat will require more section passes, but I only really took about 3 to 6 per area that I was doing, so I wouldn't say my paint was "hard."
All I used was my PC7424XP and Optimum Hyper Compound and Hyper Polish on yellow/orange flat pads and got wonderful results. A few RIDS I couldn't get out though.

Re: Newer GM Clearcoat
owned a 2011 srx caddy in raven black, and a 2012 cts v in diamond black. i opti coated both and found the paint to be anything but hard. forget the mf or surbuf type pads and stay much less aggresive.

Re: Newer GM Clearcoat
The hardness people refer to with GM paint is aimed more specifically toward the Corvettes and is completely accurate.
The only other hard clear I've encountered from GM is white pearl. Otherwise their paints are relatively easy to work with.

Re: Newer GM Clearcoat
Thanks all, much appreciated. I was aware of the Corvette paint. Looks like my standard orange pads & Menz will do the trick. Now if it will ever cool down in South TX I can get to work on the CTS.
